January 7, 2022The Arrow Graphics decals worked perfectly, despite being more than 25 years old.2
January 7, 2022Arrow Graphics always had history of the markings included.3
January 7, 2022The Hobbycraft kit is very basic and has some inaccuracies, but as far as I know, it is currently the only 1:72 kit in existence.4
January 7, 2022Clear parts in place. The canopy is very thick.5

January 7, 2022Alclad 2 white primer/filler is my choice for finding surface defects.8
January 7, 2022I airbrushed the whole airframe with Tamiya Gloss White.9
January 7, 2022Testor's Model Master Acrylic Guards Red is a good match for the CAF colour from that period.10
January 7, 2022The nose gear doors and smoke oil tanks.11
January 7, 2022Alclad 2 Polished Aluminum over gloss black for the leading edges of the wings and tail surfaces.12
January 7, 2022Tamiya NATO Black is used for the anti-glare panel.13
January 7, 2022The roundels went on very well.14

January 7, 2022The Snowbird logo on the rudder was adopted for the 1973 season.19

January 7, 2022No pitot tube in the kit, so I scratchbuilt my own from styrene rod. The spiral stripe on the pitot tube is a strip of red decal material. This is very tricky!21
January 7, 2022The tip of the pitot is made from stretched sprue.22
January 7, 2022A green navigation light from CMK Resin finishes off the wingtip.23

January 7, 2022The 1971 colour scheme for the debut of Canada's Display Team.31
January 7, 2022The kit also has no oil line details for the smoke system on the Snowbirds version, so some styrene rod was used, pre-formed and connected with Tamiya Extra Thin Cement.32
January 7, 2022The ends of the smoke oil lines are formed where they enter the tail fairing.33
January 7, 2022I made the rear smoke pipe fairing from an aluminium printer's plate.34
January 7, 2022The lines in place with Tamiya Tape for attachment straps.35
January 7, 202236
January 7, 2022Fine solder replicates the lines from the oil manifold to the tanks.37
January 7, 2022Fine solder bent into a U shape replicates the smoke oil tubing.38
January 7, 2022Glue the closed end of the solder U into the pipe fairing.39
January 7, 2022Use a round tool to bend the solder into place.40
January 7, 2022The finished pipes look very convincing.41
January 7, 2022The kit landing gear is far too long!42
January 7, 2022First, I cut the main gear struts and removed the correct amount.43
January 7, 2022The nose gear had to be shortened as well.44
January 7, 2022Then drill a hole in the center of the struts.45
January 7, 2022Same process for the nose gear.46
January 7, 2022A short length of styrene rod will strengthen the connection.47
January 7, 2022After shortening the struts, it looks more accurate.48
January 7, 2022I did the 1973 scheme on the starboard side, with the new Snowbirds logo on the rudder.49
January 7, 2022This is the 1971 scheme, with "The Big 2" logo on the rudder.50
