I wanted to make this a sacrificial bird for practice covering with foil as a bare metal "what-if" USMC version, but the thought of having to sand down the raised panel lines and re-scribe this beast is somewhat off-putting.

If you got a decent airbrush you can use Alclad Chrome with Honey Base Primer underneath. Or the new AK Xtreme Metal range. You can also use Xtreme Metal on tube with paint brushes, and polish it with a piece of cloth. A lot less hassle and I'm pretty sure both of these options will give you a better end result than foil 👍

Thanks, Vegard. I admit I'm more of a rattle can guy than an airbrush guy (space is an issue). I have seen a few interesting Alcad/Tremclad/Krylon offerings that could offer interesting finishes, too. The big reason I wanted the foil practice is for my 1/24 RCAF Mustang project. Real foil will look amazing on something that scale...hence the sacrificial model. Maybe my CF-104 Starfighter is a better choice?

I admit I have little knowledge about foil, but I do know about easier ways to obtain the same result. But if you enjoy foiling then go for it 🙂 That's the most important thing. If you're looking for an easier way without using airbrush you should look up AK True Metal 👍 All you need is a flat brush and a piece of cloth, and you won't need to remove all the raised details.

Excellent. I wasn't familiar with AK, so there's something else to explore.
