I've seen it on Britmodeller but now I can finally say "well done" !

Which 1:48 scale kit? The Classic Airframes injection/resin kit, or the Dynavector vacuform?
18 October 2011, 03:01

I can't wait to see it - the Gannet is one of my favorite planes, no idea why. I've never seen the Classic Airframes kit, but I've seen a couple built that look pretty good.

Hello Bill,
wounderful and inspiring- to say the least. You have done real admirable work to one of my favourite planes- Well done!

awesome build Bill! And well deserved trofees too, congrats! I'm allways happy to see models with my avatar on it 😉
I believe it is best to sell my Trumpeter Gannet and look out for the Revell one instead...
17 February 2012, 11:09

or I can cannibalise my Trumpeter kit as it has a lot of ordnance options wich the Revell kit does not have I believe?
17 February 2012, 11:18

Awesome build, I wonder if I can get my Trumpeter kit to look so good, probably not.

Hi Bill,
congrats for the first price medal and it is realy a pretty one! It`s one of my favorite Carrier planes and I hope this type will be soon available in scale 48 from Trumpeter, Revell or otherwise. CA was too expensive for me.

Congrats with your first price medal, how is the build of this one Bill, greetz Phil

Thanks everyone! I really enjoyed building this RoG kit, the fit was very good (little filler was needed). The Big Ed set added a lot of detail to the cockpit and the gear and weapon bays. You guys are right, though, it needs some torpedos in the weapons bay. I think someone makes them in resin, I should have a look.

Can you please give me 5 minutes, just to stop drooling and put my jaw back in place?
26 August 2012, 04:54

Thanks again guys! Lionel, put your jaw back in and save the drool - there are so many exquisite models here that you will need to save some! 🙂

Nice to see a Gannet. Which reminds me that I've got one from Dynavector still in my stash. 🙂

I've recently added torpedoes and sonobuoys to the weapons bay, I need to post a new picture. Thanks for the nice comments!

This aircraft looks more heavy every time I look at it... most impressive work Bill!

Wow!!! Bill, I missed this one.
What a brilliant, beautiful little Fairey you have there.
Excellently built, top notch Bill8) 👍

Nice little kit from Revell, too. I need to get the Alley Cat Airborne Early Warning version for a stablemate:
Fairey Gannet AEW.Mk.3 (Alley Cat ACRK72001, 1:72)

Congrats on your victory with this last Saturday! It is breathtaking....and a subject not normally seen at shows!!!!

I've uploaded a shot of the weapons bay with the torpedoes and sonobuoys. Looks much better than an empty bay! 🙂

I have the Trumpy Wyvern in 1/48th that's in my stash waiting for an opportunity soon. You wouldn't happen to have the French Navy Alize would you (I believe that's a Mach 2 kit)?
9 May 2013, 17:19

You really know how to turn an ugly plane into a Beauty. Fantastic work. Like every bit of it!
9 May 2013, 18:23

There's something beautiful about her ugliness.
In her functionallity you must allow her a little leaway in other departments...
9 May 2013, 19:17

Dave: Probably not, but the ailerons are hinged on the model, and they droop. Damn gravity. I should probably fix that. The ailerons that is, not gravity. 🙂
John: No Mach 2 in my collection or stash. There are some things you can't make me do! The Wyvern sounds very cool - that kit (and the 1:72 version) were tooled by Monochrome in Japan. They are beautiful!
Sebastian: The Fairey-Youngman flaps are very distinctive. Several British designs have them. You wouldn't normally see them dropped on the ground though, so there is some artistic license in the model!
Steve: You are right, it's a very functional design. The dual in-line engines, each driving one of the props, was brilliant. When patrolling over the ocean, the crew would routinely shut down one engine and feather its prop, and cruise on just one engine. This led to a large increase in range.
Cheers!

I asked Danni about the ailerons. She's in Australia and has her own personal Gannet in their museum. She is very knowledgeable about the Gannet, as well as many other planes flown by the Australian forces.
The ailerons on the Gannet would be in a neutral position when the aircraft is parked. They do not droop down. During flight, they are typical ailerons, when one is down the other is up. On my model, I depicted the Fairey-Youngman flaps deployed, which would only occur on the ground if they were being serviced.
I could pose the ailerons one up and one down - that would be interesting. Or I could put them in the neutral position. Shall we have a vote?

Album info
Includes "Big Ed" photoetch set. Paint is Gunze H333 Extra Dark Sea Grey over H74 Sky. Black panel line wash plus pastel postshading. This has been on Britmodeller and ARC, so you may have seen it already, but I think these new photos are better. The model won first place at Rocon 32, Sept 2011 (Rochester, NY) in 1:72 multi-engine prop category, as well as taking the overall Best Aircraft award.
