Christian Bruer AutorThere a lot of bubbles to fill, so no first coat of paint this weekend. Because of a lot of work to do to clean the parts I add the horizontal tail parts. They are in an interesting V-shape. Fit was ok but needs also primer and sanding. While doing that I found some more bubbles to fill😉
I fit a self sealing aluminum foil to the suspensions struts to simulate the different diameters of the struts.
An interesting model but not easy to handle for an natural metal finish. Just thinking how to add the different shades because there are no panel lines on the surface?!

Christian Bruer AutorNow the second coat of filler is applied. Hopefully there are now more visible bubbles or scratches on the surface ? I will see while polishing the surface now. The few small parts got a coat of paint as well, I use Vallejo natural steel to paint the parts for the landing gear and black grey for the props.

Christian Bruer AutorWell, after a third light coat of primer and smooth polishing I add a first coat of Alclad II Duraluminium. It did not look 100% perfect because of some slopes and dales in the primed resin surface I hadn?t seen, but I?m ok with it. One of the O-rings in my Triplex broke off and hopefully I will get a replacement part as soon as possible, to add some more coats of different Aluminum shades.

Burkhard DIt is certainly challenging to get a 1/144 resin kit sufficiently smooth for a merciless Alclad coat 👍👍👍

Christian Bruer AutorI just have painted the engines inside of the nacelles. Not so easy cause the details are a little bit hulking, but looking from a distance it comes out quite nice. I don?t know if a brass ignition distributor is correct but it looks ok. All the small parts are finished with a weathering and some highlighting and the wheels are fixed to the landing gear.

Christian Bruer AutorI do not believe that somebody will do a DC-5 in plastic because this model isn't as popular than a DC-3. Just wondering there are these resin kits in scale 1/72 and 1/144.

Christian Bruer AutorA first coat of Duraluminum was followed by some more coats of Aluminum and Dark Aluminum. Masking was done with Tamiya tape following the panel lines shown on a scale drawing I found in the internet. Masking was not so easy because there are no engraved or raised panel lines on the kit surface. Yesterday I work the whole day painting all the panel lines by masking a few, airbrush them, mask some more, airbrush them and so on. That went only well because Alclad dries really fast! Today I add the decals. They are really thin and fine and went well to the surface. I damage both decals WAKAGO, they flipped when I try to add them to the surface. I tried to rescue them but without success. Adding the last decal PJ - on the upper wing I noticed a scratch while the decal dries. May this is due to a reaction between Micro Set and Sol with the Alclad paint, because the was no scratch or damage to the surface before. Unfortunately this is nor to repair without a lot of work so I decide to leave it like it is. I try to drop a line to F-Rsin and hope to get the WAKAGO decals as a replacement part. Well, the bird is nearly finished and only miss the antenna and a display. Hope you like it!

Christian Bruer AutorWith Laurent?s replacement decals I have finished the KLM DC-5 project so far. The last thing I add was the antenna made of stretched sprue. The display is a self made runway out of 0,75mm styrene with engraved panels. Painting was done by airbrush using different Vallejo grey and brown tones. Weathering was done with oil colors. When completely dry I will fix the sheet of styrene to the base using acrylic paste.

There kit comes with 14 resin and 3 white metal parts. The casting is ok but there is a big mismatch on the underside of the fuselage and a lot of air bubbles in the casting. They become visible while sanding the mismatch. So there is a lot of cleaning, sanding and correcting to do to get a clean surface for a natural metal finish! There are now panel lines on the surface except the ailerons, flaps, rudders, doors and windows. The white metal parts are ok, but I replaced the suspension strut at the nose landing gear by brass rod. I loaned two propellers from one of my DC-3 kits because the resin parts are really rough and hard to get of the gate. Hopefully I cleaned the surface well so far I plan to add a base coat with Alclad grey primer next weekend!
