It is better to finish first the water base for a new model, especially you plan to show the model in a more or less rough sea as I plan with Z 30. The Styrofoam board was shaped using a sharp modeling knife and a rotating contact brush. Next I masked the under lower hull of the model and set it to the base. Now it was time to cover the surface with self made papier-mâché in a more or less thick layer. The papier-mâché will be better to form if you add a good portion paste to it. Once formed I wait until the papier-mâché start to dry and carefully cut out the model. Now I set the base away for a while to let the papier-mâché dry. Some more progress as soon as it dries😉 Cheers, Christian

Next to work on the smaller parts for HMS Montgomery I experimented with the base for Z30 and HMS Westminster. Using papier-mache to sculp waves for such long bases isn?t a good choice because of warping due to the drying of the papier-mache. I tried some things like to add expansion joints etc. but this seems to be only a reparation. Better is to make it right from the beginning. A chat with my close friend Frank let me quit using papier-mache and a restart the base, this time I sculpted the sea only by using a rotating contact brush with a drilling machine with variable speed. The effect was much better than before and now I sand the surface carefully, just to break lightly the upper surface. Then I add a first coat of wall paint, little later a second now in a stippling motion. Now I let it dry before I will add some more layers of wall paint to get a more or less effect of the small waves.

Danke! Es passt alles ganz gut zusammen. An den Aufbauten muss trotz Gerung an den Ecken etwas gespachtelt werden. Eine Lücke tut sich unterhalb der Brücke zum Vorbau auf. Aber alles kein Problem so weit. Ist im Grunde wie Z25, hat sogar den gleichen Rumpf😉 Daher muss hier noch die Scheuerleiste weg!

Wenn Du das Ding vorne am Rumpf meinst:
Das ist eine Spritzwasserleiste.
Damit sollte das Vorschiff von Spritzwasser freier gehalten werden.
Aber ob das wirklich sooo funktioniert hat ??? 🤔

Have a "Seestueck" like this on my mind since years. Will follow your progress very closely to lose some of the reserve I have against such projects. Very nice progress so far! How is the dust caused by the styrofoam manageble during machining? Turns hobbyrooms into "Schlachtfelder"? 🙂

Hi Torben, thank you for your interest and kind comment. Luckily I have a small work shop in a stable next to my house and I do all the things making dust and dirt in the stable. Before I start machining Styrofoam I put all my stuff on the bench beside. You should wear an Overall and for safety protective glasses and a mask. If you pre cut the board to reduce the dust, but a bit more or less doesn?t matter because you will have to clean the bench and the floor. Another place could be the garden, but it isn?t fun hanging around there in the cold. Cheers, Christian

@Torben, seems to be a bad idea. You will have to clean up erverything in your appartement😉
@Acki, yep, the uprgrade set is really nice, but it is not a must have to get a nice model out of the kit.

@Gabor, actually I try different ways to represent a seascape of my ideas. You can use Styrofoam (thermal insulation material 30 - 40mm thick) to make a moved seascape. The waves are shaped by a cutter knife and sanded with a rotating contact brush using a thrilling machine. You should know how it should look when finished, life like photos of ships in a sea state you?d like to present are very helpful. If the seascape is in a good shape I cut out the lines for the lower hull and fit the boat to the board. Don?t worry of gaps, they shouldn?t be to large but you can fill them later when seascape and boat are finished so far. Next I add wall paint in a stippling motion on top of the surface to represent the small waves and choppy sea. Add wall paint in some layers, but wait until each layer is still dry to avoid any cracks on the surface. When all this looks good you can start painting the base. I use acrylics in different shades of grey, green and blue. Now you can add waves etc. using tissue paper and cotton wool. When this is finished some thick layers of high gloss varnish will give the final touch. Take a look to my Album Ship Model Displays:
