The large chin radiator on Hawker Typhoon and Tempest V generated considerable drag and Hawkers experimented with both types to reduce it. In 1944 a standard Tempest V, serial no. NV768, was taken off the production line and modified with an annular radiator and lowered thrust line for the Napier Sabre engine. Top speed increased by 15mph (to approximately 450mph) but in the event it was decided not to disrupt production for a relatively minor improvement. My model is based on the Academy Tempest V (1/72) with a replacement fuselage, wing intakes etc from Kora Kits, plus a fair amount of scratch building. I didn't like the rendering of the exhausts on the Kora fuselage so made my own by modding the Academy ones. I also kept the Academy propeller though I had to modify the spinner, which was slightly longer on the experimental aircraft. I've included a comparison shot of the standard Tempest V (also Academy) alongside the modded one. I'd be interested if anyone else has attempted this build or perhaps t
