Mykhlik Vasily Ilich's war was as a member of the 566th assault aviation regiment, a part of the 277th Air Division of the 13th Air Army. His roles inluded navigator, wing commander and squadron commander. He carried out 188 sorties. On February 23, 1945, senior lieutenant Mykhlik Vasily Ilich was awarded Hero of the Soviet Union with Order of Lenin and Gold Star medal (No. 5936) for exemplary fulfillment of command duties, courage and heroism.

On Vasily Mykhlik’s initiative aircraft of the regiment, the pilots drew a silhouette of the Peter and Paul Fortress with the legend “For Leningrad”.
