2nd Armored Brigade was established in Apr 1940 from the 2nd Light Armored Brigade. Under command of the 1st Armored Division, 2nd Armored Brigade was sent to France in May 1940. The Brigade was ill-equipped, Ill-trained and soundly defeated in the face of German Blitzkrieg. Remnants of the brigade evacuated to England without any tanks or heavy equipment.
A period of re-equipping and training in England for a German invasion was followed by deployment to North Africa in November 1941. Under command of the 1st Armored Division and (briefly) the 7th Armored Division (Operation Crusader) 2nd Armored Brigade took part in battles throughout the balance of the African campaign including Gazala, El Alamein, Mareth and Tunis. From June 1943 2nd Armored Brigade refitted and trained in Egypt until deployment to Italy in July 1944 where it remained until VE Day.
A broad range of equipment and camouflages were used in these campaigns.
