The Hippo is a British light armoured Beach Recovery Vehicle (BRV) introduced in 2003. Prime contractor was Hagglunds Moelv of Norway (who then became part of Alvis, now BAE). The Hippo is based on a German Leopard 1A5. Only 4 of these recovery vehicles were obtained and are in service with the Royal Marines. Two of them are carried (one each) onboard landing ships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark, with two used by 11 (Amphibious Trials and Training) Squadron Royal Marines.
