I'm quite a fan of Dornier's designs - he was obviously the most prolific user of this design but there were previous ones apparently. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push-pull_configuration. 1915 the first, Dornier's Wal 1922.

The very first multi-engine plane, Sikorsky Grand of 1913 was of push-pull design. So was Zeppelin Staaken, and Dornier, who was at the time an employee, probably got familiar with it during his Zeppelin years
