After two years of inactivity I restarted the project to build the Sopwith Schneider, the winner of the Monaco seaplane race April 20th, 1914.
The two wooden main floats have now wooden strips for easier ground handling.
1 January 2020, 21:53

Great project Frank. Filling those floats with lead is genius 👍. Happy New Year and hope all is well with you.
1 January 2020, 22:45

Thank you Alec, your are the most faithful fan 👍 Happy New Year for you too! All is well so far ...
The two years of inactivity was only regarding to this project😉
Also a warm welcome to Juergen!

The wings are shaded and painted with different linen color paints.
4 January 2020, 18:47

Thank you Torben!
As I mentioned there are no decals available for the Racer. But a friend jumped in and offered to help - he created masks on his cutting machine 👍 Since X-mas I own such cutter too, so it is another important reason to finally use the provided masks! So the racing numbers are applied to the wings.
5 January 2020, 10:25

Again a wooden update, many new parts created for the cockpit.
6 January 2020, 21:46

Thank you Alec!
The engine is finished, all kit parts are done. Ignition wires and oil wash follows later, prior mounting.
7 January 2020, 16:54

Thank you very much mates! I hope to close the fuselage soon.
9 January 2020, 21:04

You always amaze me Bughunter, looking great so far! That engine is really nice
9 January 2020, 21:14

Thank you Erik! Sometimes I NEED to work with wood, this project was a long time on the ToDo list and the floats are done long ago. Additionally a friend cut the masks for me on his electronic cutting machine - so I was forced to put the Albatros aside and really start this project.
9 January 2020, 21:45

Absolutely stunning - the level of detail in relation to the size of everything; I'm just gobsmacked... just beautiful. Everything in the pics; just incredible. Inspiring.
9 January 2020, 21:54

What a feedback! Thx Hans and Tom! Hans, the engine will look better after a oil wash😉 This project is somehow a repetition of my "Lebed" project, which is was a russian copy of a Tabloid, on wheels. And this Schneider is a Sopwith Tabloid with 100hp engine on floats, and the win of the Monaco Schneider Trophy was historically important for the company Sopwith.
9 January 2020, 22:08

Spanjaard, it is nice to see you in this project too. The fuselage is closed now😉
10 January 2020, 20:13

I can't tell if mastery like this encourages or discourages me...bit of both
12 January 2020, 22:27

Wow. What a huge amount of modifications. The Idea to build the floats out of wood ist great. The rotary enginge looks perfect.
13 January 2020, 12:19

As usual: master class without compromise! In den Streben aus Holz Verstärkung aus Draht? Wie gemacht?
13 January 2020, 16:25

Thank you mates and a warm welcome to the new visitors!
@JD, I hope a bit more of encourages? At least I hope to give some ideas😉
@Norbert, here is no kit of the Monaco Racer in 48 available, but with many differences to the later production float plane. The advantage is, that this is a unique model. I guess if I'm done, somebody will release a kit.😉
13 January 2020, 16:40

Excellent craftsmanship and work with so many different materials 👍
17 January 2020, 18:02

The floats are finished now with self made fittings and secured in place with 32 0.2mm "bolts"😉
17 January 2020, 18:03

Your reproductions of early 20-th century (although some say the 19th century only truly ended in the flames of 1914-18 - a thought I really like) materials and DIY assembly techniques is extraordinary as such, but provided the sizes involved, it's really a craftsmanship achievement - to scale everything down, including all the different surface & texture structures - top 👍
however... I've seen relics of heresy on picture 14 - one wielding 2 blades, the other equipped with a full four... Will you use one of these, or are we in for a full wooden reproduction?😉 😄
18 January 2020, 10:22

Thank you mates for your kind words!
Slavo, picture 14 is only to show all the options provided by the kit. Both airscrews do not match, because after some trouble with the engine, the Sopwith team borrowed an airscrew with smaller diameter but higher pitch from another team, as advised by engine manufacturer.
More soon!
19 January 2020, 13:10

A lot of work on alu parts. Now the fuselage reached its form and the 9-cylinder engine fits 👍 Especially for Slavo the picture 57😉
19 January 2020, 17:39

Thank you mates! Evgeny, I hope to finish it until end of January.
After a long research I discovered the mounting of the front bearing of early Tabloids and this Schneider.
For the later ones there is a nice picture: [img1]
But the racer is different: [img2]
But then I found this picture of a replica: [img3]
So I know finally, what to build 😉
20 January 2020, 17:56

It makes a lot of fun to follow this inspiring project. I much like the mix of materials you use to extra detail the little Sopwith 👍
20 January 2020, 19:34

Thx! Bernhard, you are right, the rivets are 0,2mm nickel silver. Now I can continue, I had to add the front before to stabilize the thin alu "ears".
Christian, to work with metal is fun for me, and the only way for me to create a stable and robust model. As usual on my models the rotary engine should be able to rotate with the mounted airscrew😉
20 January 2020, 21:37

another master class in the making. always a pleasure to see you metal working skills in action 🙂
21 January 2020, 00:17

After some failed trials the cowling is done 🙂 plus some more parts.
25 January 2020, 20:31

Thanks for looking and commenting! I hope to be able to show a next update soon.
3 February 2020, 22:02

So I added the promised update. Made new masks after familiarise myself with Inkscape (inkscape.org What a great tool 👍😢 and cutting plotter.
7 February 2020, 21:24

Thank you Jim and Alec! It is a "Silhouette Portrait 2", but it comes without Linux software. So I use it with Inkscape and a plugin, works great. The plugin looks only for USB, so Bluetooth is not working (yet).
8 February 2020, 16:08

Nice. I have Silhouette Cameo, love it. I use it with Corel Draw. So far I cut only styrene, but have mask cutting on my to-do 👍
8 February 2020, 16:31

bug, what plotter are you using? I'm interested looking into something like that. I've always wanted to get a laser cutter but maybe a knife cutter is more cost effective. I've seen the Cricut Maker/Explorer highly recommended but not sure how detailed of cuts it can do for things like detailed masks.
8 February 2020, 20:39

Yep, that is what I wanted to answer too😉
A laser cutter is may be not a good idea to cut PVC masking foil (chlorine!). A knife cut is much more precise.
Is this Cricut a cloud device? I heard, that some cutters needs a internet connection and cloud - I would never buy such things. If the cloud is no more supported, the device is bricked.
9 February 2020, 18:58

That comes out better and better. I'm really impressed by you talented work 👍
9 February 2020, 19:50

Thank you Christian! After a very productive weekend (good preparation pays back) I added the next batch pf pictures.
9 February 2020, 20:41

Oh no Tom! Two years ago I built virtually the same kit - a russian Tabloid copy called "Lebed". After that model was finished, I created the wooden floats with idea to create the Schneider one day. The real work on this project started in the first week of January to use the Xmas cutting plotter.
So this racer was created in 1,5 month.
10 February 2020, 20:53

Last update on St Valentine's Day, so I added some flowers 😉 The pictures after the race show them clearly, eg. [img1]
So I call this project DONE. Thanks for watching 👍
14 February 2020, 11:28

By the way: the plane looks like the original! Absolutely perfect especially the weathering.
14 February 2020, 11:44

Utterly amazing result! It's difficult for me to believe this quality is possible in 1/48.
14 February 2020, 15:32

Thank you mates! Glad you like the model!
@Bernhard: Please see pic 118, I got them from a friend for my MOAB dio some time ago. I guess it comes from railway modeling?
14 February 2020, 18:20

Spanjaard and James, thank you very much! I need some time for final clear cote and final pictures after that.
16 February 2020, 17:15

Thanks Paulo and Roland! I will add one day an album with final pictures.
18 February 2020, 22:15

Wohoo - perfection gets accomplished... Really hard to pick something specific for the spotlight here, but I think the metalwork on the cowling is possibly the best ever... 👍 👍 👍 +I will write nothing about the pitot assembly, courtesy of simple lack of words...😉
3 March 2020, 09:50

Thank you mates! After some heavy delay due to illness (no, no Corona; but I was down fro a while after recovery) now I added the final album to the project. Have fun with the new pictures!
17 March 2020, 22:09

Juergen, great completion! The amount of additional work is simply amazing. Standing ovation!
20 March 2020, 06:13

Thank you mates for your nice feedback! I like this little piece of history due to the wooden and metal parts very much. In case you missed the final pics: Sopwith Schneider Monaco Racer 1914 | Album by bughunter (1:48)
