German submarine U-552 as it was appearing in July 1941, at the end of its last cruise, in Saint-Nazaire.
Nicknamed "Roter Teufel" because of the painting on its conning tower, U552 was commanded Erich Topp, which was accused of war crimes after two attacks; he was never trialed for these.
The submarine itself survived the war, only to be scuttled in Wilhelmshaven in 1945.
