The umpowered vessel rides out a gale, basically at the mercy of winds and waves. Held in place only by its main anchor.

Nice work Frank. Did they realy use only one anchor during a gale?

I asked my more knowledgeable friends, and from what they told me I gathered the additional anchors were spares. With one anchor, the vessel can freely turn when the wind comes from another direction, and there´s no danger of anchor chains tangling. But being a real landlubber I can´t be sure at all! From what I read, the anchors used on those vessels were of the mushroom type in the first place. But again, that might hold true for the main anchor only ...
