December 14, 2024Test fitting then gluing the roll cage2
December 14, 2024Done and ready to roll3
December 14, 2024Holes drilled in the tub for running wires4
December 14, 2024I forgot to take a picture of the before on the foot rest, but I drilled the holes out before adding the photoetch cover from the detail-up kit5
December 14, 2024Installed and looks a lot better. Unfortunately no one will ever see it after the model's complete. But I'll know it's there6
December 14, 20247
December 14, 2024Found a detailed M10 engine online to 3d print. I know it's a step backwards from the S14 but I couldn't find a good file with enough details to get.
Changed my mind. My print failed and while trying to fix the file I ended up finding an M50B25 file with a turbo. So that's printing now8
December 15, 2024Mocked up some hinges to see if the design I made in my brain worked in the real world. The plan is to use 3mm square styrene rod for the hinge points and run a brass rod through them. The hinges are .040" styrene sheets9
December 15, 2024My test piece seemed to work10
December 15, 2024Hinges were able to open to 90° on the mockup11
December 15, 2024Connecting the hinge to the "hood"12
December 15, 2024Went with a 3 piece hinge base to keep things closer together for strength and to fit neatly under the radiator/hood hinge support13
December 15, 202414
December 15, 2024Had to add a sliver of .020" styrene to fill the gap on the bottom of the support but it looks pretty decent so far15
December 15, 202416
December 15, 2024Added some square tubing collars to the hinges where they'll attach to the hood to hopefully give it some extra strength. Gonna give it over night to set before testing my creation to see if the backyard engineer in my brain knows what he's talking about17
December 15, 2024Success!! This looks amazing! Gotta let it drip dry before the final cure, then a little bit of sanding and filing to clear off the rest of the support connections then it's gonna be the onerous joy of painting it18
December 15, 202419
December 15, 202420
December 15, 202421
December 15, 2024The chrome plated parts from Nunu aren't too bad, but I'm still gonna strip em and respray them with Alclad22
December 15, 2024Off the sprue and ready to soak23
December 15, 2024Time for a three day visit to Spa Simple Green24
December 15, 2024Moment of truth for my hinges25
December 15, 2024Holy crap it works!!!!26
December 15, 2024Need to do a little fine tuning to get it to open and close smoothly, but I think we've got a winner27
December 16, 2024Damn it's huge!28
December 16, 2024Can it fit??29
December 16, 2024If this bad boy's gonna get shoe horned in here I'm gonna need to do a lil surgery30
December 16, 2024Offending parts sawed off31
December 16, 2024The tranny lost a lot of meat, but I think it looks ok32
December 16, 2024It fits! It definitely fills the space up. I may try to fab or 3d print some fluid reservoirs33
December 16, 2024May be some clearance issues for the hinges, but that's Tomorrow Chris's problem34
December 18, 2024The J hook design didn't work. The bottom of the hinge interfered with the intercooler. So back to the drawing board and I figured I'd try a strut style hinge a bit more like the real car design...sorta kinda35
December 18, 2024Final design ready to test36
December 18, 2024After some trial and error and a good bit of filing and sanding I got the hood to sit flush37
December 18, 2024Plenty of clearance for the monster motor38
December 18, 2024Added some motor mounts for it to sit on39
December 18, 2024Everything closed up. Lines up nicely40
December 18, 202441
December 18, 2024I made the struts a mm or so too short so the hood doesn't stay open on its own. May try to add some weight to the front of the hood to counterbalance it42
December 18, 2024But she looks pretty tough opened up43
December 23, 2024The directions call for using Mr Color paint, but I don't have a couple of the body colors so I'm using Tamiya. Looks like the sky blue and purple from Tamiya are a different shades compared to the Mr C. Same ratios make the Tamiya a more lavender shade, which I don't hate. It'll fit in nicely with the figure I'm adding for a future diorama44
December 23, 2024Paint applied to all the parts. Some detail painting yet to be done after everything cures45
December 23, 2024I used Mission color shift purple to add some pizzazz to the body paint work. Looks amazing in person. Hopefully photos do it justice46
December 29, 2024Everything painted and ready for assembly47
December 29, 2024Dash done. Added some UV resin to the insrument cluster and added a 3d printed switch48
December 29, 20243d printed a battery to add to the interior and ran the wiring49

Album info
NuNu 1990 BMW M3 E30 kit that I'll be painting my own way and adding some extra details to...cables and wiring in the interior. I'm also 3D printing an engine..upgrading from the stock S14 motor to an M10 with Weber carbs I found online. Though I guess that's technically downgrading to an older model but I couldn't find a 3d file for the S14 in my 2.3 seconds of searching. I may even mess around and see if I can hinge the hood to open but we'll see what my engineering and fabricating skill have to say about that
