The Brigade was founded in 1939 as the Heavy Armoured Brigade (Egypt). At the outbreak of WWII, the name was changed to the 4th Armoured Brigade under command of the 7th Armored Division. The Brigade would see continuous action throughout the North African Campaign, Sicily, Italy, and NW Europe.
Under the 7th Armored Division, the Brigade fought from Operation Compass to El Alamein. Thereafter, the Brigade came under various Corps commands as an independent Brigade.
