The He 100 was a projected fighter aircraft from 1938 that despite from its superior characteristics was not admitted as second "Standartjäger" aside the Bf109 . It climbed faster , had a 1/3 greater range and was with the same armament and same motor 100km/h faster then the 109 . Originaly the V3 was modified to gain the absolut world speed record . The wings were shortened to a span of 7,60m , it got a streamlined cockpit and motor was changed to a Daimler Benz DB 601 re V ,an inverted V12 zyl. uprated to 2770 PS for a short living period .
On one test flight the pilot had to bail out due to a jammed undercarriage leg . An emergency landing with its high wingloading was absolut impossible . After that the V8 which got the same civil registration was built in the same configuration .
It is pleasing , that a manufacturer produces this airplane in1:32 , but there would be enough to correct , if you only built the series aircraft . The propeller and the propeller spinner have a wrong shape . The spinner was enlarged and sanded to the right shape . The propeller of the kit was deleted and replaced by the wrong one of a Trumpeter kit of a Bf109F ,which got the right Propeller from"Aires" .A lot of work had to be done to correct the lower wing root . There is a step from the fuselage belly to the wing , but it had to be as on the mustang . The contour of the belly comming from the lower motor compartement follows the wing profile slightly upwards . The fuselage belly forms one plane surface with the wings lower surface .
So the wheel cover have to be plane with a slight curvatur following the nose conture .
The short wings makes it nessessary to cut . First the wingtips . They are to be refittet .
The ailerons and outer flaps where cut in one piece . The outer wings leading edge got a slight angle (1,5°) backwards . The outer wing shortened ca. 3cm and a rear wedge so that the flaps close the rear contour from the inner wing to the new tip .
In the cockpit area the rear window was deleted and the fuselage closed what in real was closed with a sheet .
The streamlined cockpit cover was carved from a balsa block . I use always one way bottles and a heat gun . When heatet the plastic shrinks to the enclosed form . So I get a blank .
So the biggest problem is . I know only 3 fotos of the V8 , which show the wing root and cockpit area with the pilot after the record flight . And rest is lost in time . Its a fact that the plane was not painted only filled and polished .
About a week later the Bf209 set a new record 9km/h faster but flown at about 700m hight not at sea level .
Further attempts were forbidden . What happened to the plane is not known . May be the defeat frustrated the people of Heinkel and they closed the drawer .
Weeks later the fuselage of V10 fitted with the short wings and the streamlined cockpit cover was hung up in Deutsches Museum Munic painted in camouflage and military markings . The rest is unknown . All fotos that were attributed to the V8 were in real fotos of the V3 painted in gray with civil and even (wrong)military markings .
A model of a famous record machine , that had no paintjob . And no one knows , what this beauty looked like .
