Watching!
Luv the big bombers, I got a few of these in my vintage stash.
I want to build a Revell Shak to pair with the Revell Lanc I'm doing now.
6 April 2022, 09:16

This airplane stuff is new to me so bear with me here as I muddle through. Lol. And That's awesome. If this one goes ok for me I'd love to do a Lanc to pair with this one as sort of a lineage pairing.

Hahaha I'm new to plane building too Kyle!
This will be only be my 3rd, I'm a dedicated car & bike builder ……… can't wait to see your progress 👍
6 April 2022, 10:48

I'm mostly a dedicated car builder as well. This, ironically, is also my 3rd airplane. But the 2 others were years ago, so this is like starting over.
6 April 2022, 21:17

Welcome! I certainly don't mind, if you don't mind me not knowing what I'm doing. Lol!
6 April 2022, 22:56

Welcome to the party! Just hoping I can get a clean build out of it. Lol
7 April 2022, 04:48

Well I've made some more progress. Interior done, weight added as I'm building it gear down…(until my gear collapses) And just got the fuselage halves sealed up after doing some masking. Fit still hasn't been terrible. Instructions a little vague here or there but no big deal.
8 April 2022, 08:07

Progress continues. Got the fuselage together and the wings attached. All really relatively painless so far. Newish Revell molds aren't bad other than some excessive flash and the worst spruce gates I've ever encountered. Included some close up shots in case anyone was considering the Shack and wanted to see the fit and finish before any work is done.
8 April 2022, 20:19

Thank you! I'm enjoying it. Pretty far outside my usual experience but at least it's resembling a Shackleton so far. Lol
8 April 2022, 22:47

I love the old ones too. I like a jet or two but the piston aircraft really get me.
9 April 2022, 05:21

Got most of the outer bodywork in place now if I get time after work this evening I'll start working on filling obvious areas and working on getting the rest of the glass masked. Having fun with this return to airplanes
10 April 2022, 22:18

As expected, I am terrible with progress reports and updating wip stuff. But you didn't miss anything but a lot of sanding! Got everything masked and primed and finally painted so we can move towards the finish line.
18 April 2022, 20:11

Thank you! Much appreciated. It has been a fun build so far considering I have no idea what I'm doing. 😂😂

Got the big Avro mostly assembled and have been slogging through the decals. I generally enjoy decalling quite a bit, however these decals are not friendly. The lay down ok and they pop pretty good but the clear areas just do not want to lay down. Luckily it's not super excessive anywhere except between letters on the giant WR975 or in between the yellow on the walkways. 😑😑 Just dumping the micro sol on them. Still, I remain happy with how this is gone considering my lack of experience with airplanes.
24 April 2022, 05:09

Decals finished up. Will hit them with some future after they dry and then shoot some flat clear over everything and see how we end up.
24 April 2022, 07:15

That's looking fantastic Kyle!!! I forget just how big a Shack was, proper monster!
24 April 2022, 19:16

Thanks all.
It is so big I still have no idea what I'm going to do with it once it's done. Lol.
24 April 2022, 19:34

Kyle. May I suggest you look on line for some second hand display cabinets for your Shackelton. ? As Having your collection expand and leaving them stacked up in a corner of your allocated space is not an ideal outcome for all your hard work.
And from what I have seen of all your cars, they deserve the best of care and attention.
Your collection is certainly well built. 👍 👍 🙂
28 April 2022, 02:08

Kerry, I have one display cabinet which houses the entirety of my built car collection, still with room for several more! The massive Shack, however is not going to fit. So I think I may have to source something else, just as you say, to try to house this monstrosity. I've greatly enjoyed the build, and changing up from the normal cars, but no forethought was used here. LOL
28 April 2022, 11:33

Good to know my friend. 🙂
I hate to think of how many models I have discarded over the years before IKEA came out with their cheap display cases. :-O
But now. My whole collection of about 100 models have been saved from the tip and still an other display case to assemble. hehehehehe 🙂 🙂 👍
28 April 2022, 12:37

I know that feeling as well. I took about 10 years away from the hobby after I graduated and went on to deal with real life. 90% of those models from before are gone. As I now have a supportive wife and room to put some display cabinets I am able to have somewhere to put them!
28 April 2022, 19:50

Thank you James! It's been a very fun build. Outside of what I normally do, so learning lots
28 April 2022, 21:59

LOL. And where have I heard that comment before. ???
Every kit I tackle presents new challenges. Even with the ones I have doubled up on. Oh joy. !!! 🙂
29 April 2022, 00:28

You aren't kidding there Kerry! Always many things to be learned. This is my first airplane since 2017, when I first got back into the hobby, only 3rd one ever. My first time working with masking canopies, first time trying to make something look really well used. I'm going to be attempting the antenna wires, we'll see how that goes. It's been an experience so far!
29 April 2022, 01:03

There is a very fine 'thread' available from stores that sell products for clothes making that is black, nylon, and ultra thin for the 'scale' look.
I have used it on many a model and especially the submarines of late.
And, for your masking of canopies. Do you use the mask templates or parrafilm. ?
29 April 2022, 01:14

Excellent info as always. I purchased Eduard's die cut masks for this build. Parrafilm was unknown to me prior to looking through your wonderful build threads.

I am moving this over into the completed pile. Thanks everyone who followed along with my build. I had a blast with it and overall I would recommend this kit.
It builds up rather prettily, and overall the fit and finish is pretty solid. Main problem areas were nacelle fit, fuselage windows attaching from the inside instead of the outside (I knocked one out and that was fun to get back in), and not so much a problem, but the interior details are very slim, so if you like that sort of thing it isn't great.
My own limitations caused more problems than the kit. I broke a gun barrel off the nose, I was sanding some stuff after the fuselage halves were glued, and blew my dust off as always...except I had a couple rooftop windows still to be attached and filled the interior with dust. Big facepalm there but another lesson learned.
Weathering things is also not something I have really any experience with. I did a panel line wash and randomly cleaned up areas to make it more weathered in some spots than others. I dirtied up the white so it wasn't so bright, dirtied up the bomb bay and landing gear and bays. Then I added some exhaust stains on the pipes and over the wings. The only extra detail I added were the twin antenna wires, which are incredibly hard to see.
I'm happy with how it turned out and may try to build one of the Airfix versions to match with it sometime down the road. For being 1/72 It's very big and hard to photograph. If we get a nice day here I may try to get it outside and get some pics in the sunlight instead of the artificial lights. For now, I am on to the next one.
29 April 2022, 07:24

I am sure the squadron commander would be proud to have it on his desk mate. 👍 👍 🙂
29 April 2022, 08:23

Kyle, it turned out very well despite the problems you had. Well done!
Congrats!
29 April 2022, 17:05

Fantastic result, and especially so for just your third aircraft build. Congrats mate, extremely well done. 👍
29 April 2022, 18:10

Cuajete, thank you! I almost always have issues. Lol
Thank you Ekki
Thanks James! First aircraft I've built since 2017 also. I'm a better modeler now than I was then so that did help me. I had fun with it and I believe I'll continue to build aircraft mixed in with my normal car builds.
29 April 2022, 19:56

Thanks, It does build into a really cool result. I Love these big planes.
30 April 2022, 00:08

Excellent finish mate!!! Got ya sights set on another big bomber then?
30 April 2022, 09:30

Munky- Thank you, I'm happy with it. As far as next…Medium bomber at least. Eduard limited edition B-25(Hasegawa plastic) on the bench (among a couple other things). We'll see if I can get another one stuck together alright.
Moreno- Thank you so much! Very much appreciate the kind words.

Album info
WIP if I remember to keep things updated. Only my 3rd airplane kit ever and first since probably 2017 or so.
