1/72 Revell Transall C-160

Build of the 1/72 Revell Transall model kit. Here a shot of the interior. Note that the Revell instructions have you build up the interior parts as a separate inner fuselage tube - around which you have to close up the outer fuselage shells. This famously does not work and does not fit. The way to go is to stick all the relevant interior parts to the outer shells first off.

Build of the 1/72 Revell Transall model kit. Here a shot of the interior parts. Note that the Revell instructions have you assemble the side, top, and bottom parts of the inner fuselage tube, and fit the two outer fuselage halves over it. However, this famously does not work at all and does not fit. The way to go is to stick all the relevant interior parts to the outer shells first off, and to glue the bottom cargo floor to the bottom fuselage part. and only then assemble everything.

Here a shot of the cockpit. The stairs have been removed and replaced by individual steps as per the real thing. Note that the instructions have you assemble the cockpit as part of the inner fuselage structure. This won't fit into the fuselage halves - instead the way to go is to glue in the cockpit section separately.

My wife made me cargo netting using bobbin lace. The pebbles in the picture are used as forward contraweight to prevent tail sitting. The pebbles are camouflaged as cargo.

The German Transalls will have orange rudders, panels and engines. The final colour is built up from a white base layer, then yellow - both Tamiya Matt acrylics.

The forward portion of the sponsons were orange as well. Here the yellow coat has been applied over the white.

The buildup of colours simulate the weathering on the real aircraft. One of the models's orange is somewhat weathered but still fairly orange, the other is more weathered and bleached to yellow with some areas even showing a little white. Seen here are one of the top wing's orange panels, and the sponson's nose.

The outboard portion of the engine cowlings of many German Transalls were orange. The model's engines are now in different tones of orange, depending on the level of bleaching and weathering I want to convey with each of the two.

While already into the build, I discovered LACI makes 3D-printed flaps for the Transall. I decided the taxiing one needed to have lowered flaps. The LACI set comes with the flaps in maximum (STOL) lowered position. I wanted to display the model as a regular old taxiing crate lumbering past, so I decided to cut and sand the flaps a little to have them extended in standard landing setting.

While already into the build, I discovered LACI makes 3D-printed flaps for the Transall. I decided the taxiing one needed to have lowered flaps. For this I first needed to cut out the flap area in the kit's plastic. As the wings halves were already glued, I had a tad trouble reaching into areas that needed sanding and thinning out. But I got there in the end.

Thank you all! @DerMattes - The third is closed up and has only minimal interior detail in the cargo bay. Not worth showing 😁. The closed-up one will be showing off its LACI Transall flaps set though. I expect the set in a couple of weeks.

This is an interesting approach, installing the inner tube with the fuselage halves rather than as a single piece. I'm curious to see if it works in the end. Otherwise, it's very nicely built and detailed. I'll keep watching.

Work in Progress of three Revell Transall C-160 I got dirt cheap years back. One will be finished in Armée de l'Air colours, two in Luftwaffe. all circa 1977-1983. One German example will feature the illusion of turning props using clear plastic disks. One of the kits's fuselage parts were heavily warped, such that even with all the bending back and willpower, some top panel lines of that model do not meet up. I have taken the liberty to let loose my creativity when photographing some stages of the build. Probably this will not be everyone's cup of tea.
