i wonder what the obsession is recently though with the muzzle brake tarps? was there a reason i am unaware of that they needed these?

The muzzle break tarps are shown on a lot of photos, especially on marching tigers.
On some pictures You can also see another tarp around the mg.
The crews were encouraged to keep the Barrels and muzzle breaks clean. This was ensured by the use of such tarps. Accordingly You can find an instruction on page 55 of the tigerfibel
