On 28 December 1972, the Navy claimed its first MiG kill of the Linebacker II campaign. LT(jg) Scott H. Davis, pilot and LT(jg) Geoffrey H. Ulrich, RIO, of VF-142, downed a North Vietnamese MiG-21 Fishbed with an AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile. Wildly maneuvering between altitudes of 507,000 feet, Davis and Ulrich made their kill approximately five miles to the south of the outskirts of Hanoi. The 24th MiG downed by Navy and Marine Corps pilots that year, it was also the first and only one for Enterprise during her Vietnam tours. Both men were later awarded Silver Stars for their exploit, while Commander Donald E. Riggs and Lieutenant Steven P. Crall each received the Distinguished Flying Cross for their tactical efforts in assisting Davis and Ulrich. The aircraft was shot down over North Vietnam on 3rd May 1973.
