Assigned to the USS Oriskany and CVW-16, VWF AW 212 would take advantage of the F-8E Crusader heavy external store capacity. By slinging 2000lbs Mk.84 bombs on the wing pylons. The Lancers were able to bring heavy firepower tie bear on the enemy. Also on this cruise the Lancers skipper Lt.Col Chuck Lussen would take command of CVW-16 after Cdr Stockdale was shot down and taken prisoner. This was the first time a marine command an airwing at sea since WWII.
