I live in China and modelling is very much a minority hobby here. Nice to see some non-military models here. Thanks for sharing,

Great stuff! Compared to us in the EU, the visitors seem much younger. 👍
Picture 269 confuses me a bit - is model making a school subject in China?
 1 January, 12:17
Lorraine Lin Autor
Yes George, Modeling is a relative minority hobby here in China. Comparing to military model or civil model, Anime and manga model is more popular, like GUNDAM or Garage kits. But I do see more and more new brands and new products, and more young molders.

@Erik, Indeed, the history of models in China is not long. In the late 1990s, Matchbox and Bandai established joint venture companies in China and introduced model kit products into the country. Therefore, most model enthusiasts in China are under 40 years old.
And picture 269 is from National Youth Model Championship which is organized by the government. Actually this Shanghai New year model contest also sponsored by the government since year 2006.

Can you perhaps say something about picture 248?
The heads look so ultra-realistic, I can hardly believe they were just painted. 😮

@Erik, I don't have any more background about pic 248, but I just updated two more photos (346 & 347). For figure group, personally I like pic 301 most, thr handsome soldier☺️

Thank you, Lorraine. Unbelievable, the whiskers alone. The heads look like something out of a wax museum.
I agree, 301 is really impressive. 🙂

Mr D
Thanks you for sharing your photos Lorraine 👍👍 some incredible model making.
Is model building quite popular in china ?? and are many young people involved in the hobby..??
Many thanks 👍👍

@Mr D, I would say model building, especially military models, is relatively a niche hobby here. Gundam, Anime/manga figures and GK are more popular. Model products were introduced to the Chinese market by Matchbox and Bandai in1990s, so the history of model hobby in China is about 30 years. However, I've noticed that more and more people are getting involved in this hobby, and some of the enthusiasts are at the age to start their own model brands or studios.

In this year's contest, more than 700 works were entered and 50 manufacturers participated in the exhibition, among which there were quite a number of newly established brands that brought their new products.

Model hobby has also received support and sponsorship from the government. In most middle schools, there are model clubs with dedicated instructors (aerial flight models and robots are more popular). In this model contest, the outstanding works of the junior group were also exhibited (P267 -P283) .

Mr D
Thanks Lorraine ✌️😃👍
Good to know, yes there are some great works.
The gov i🚩nvestment is probably to give kids better skills than just playing on video games and computers all the time, the Gundam interest is a Japanese influence, .... l don't think it's as popular here in the UK.
I would say the majority of modeller's in the UK at age 35 to 70 .
Thanks... good luck with your projects 👍👍
