Album info

The P-47, the Thunderbolt, the Jug.

"Zombie" was a well worn veteran P-47D of the 361st Fighter Squadron. Unusually, several pictures of the aircraft survive from different times in its life. By the time it was photographed in August of 1944, then the mount of Captain Ronald Upp, it had made the transition from high altitude escort fighter to low level bomb-truck and had been flying close air support missions over Normandy for three months. The upper sides of the invasion stripes had been crudely painted over but the lower stripes and a pair of oversized USAAF insignia were left on the lower surfaces. An RAF style Malcom hood was added sometime that summer.

My model representing "Zombie" was started the weekend before the 80th anniversary of D-Day and only finished tonight owing to rare summer modeling time. It was made from Tamiya's beautiful 1/72 Scale kit. Markings were provided by a set from Xtradecal but were tweaked to more accurately depict the aircraft as it appeared in photos taken in August 1944. The Malcom hood was represented by a Taurus Vacuform part and the model received various added scratchbuilt details here and there. The layered paint and weathering was done over many many sessions, mostly AK Real Colors acrylic lacquers, with artists oils and some Vallejo Acrylics for weathering and brushwork.
