F-4B of VMFA during the Mediterranean Cruise 1972-1973. I decided to do this Marine Squadron as a former Marine was serving on 111 Squadron, RAF at RAF Luechars at the same time as myself. I was fortunate enough to get a backseat ride in the Phantom whilst on detachment to RAF Luqa, Malta. This was with the said Marine Pilot. I am thankful to various people who were able to put me in touch with him to find out details and 531 markings of the time. I located the said markings and lo and behold the particular aircraft had also become unserviceable whilst cross decking with the Ark Royal which was docking in Valletta. To disguise the fact it was US Marine Corps the aircraft was adorned with 892 Naval Squadron markings. This is a well-documented story of this F-4.
