It is red, as various references on the web proof -- just try googling "112 Sqn RAF". Especially useful and with several hints especially to "Menace": raf-112-squadron.org/

Thanks both; I'd understood that red was the typical colour, although photos suggest that other colours were possible. In particular it has been suggested that this spinner might be mid-stone, given how close it appears to be in tone to the fuselage colour.

But from what I understand it all 112 sqd spinners durin' the war was red. Other colours on it though after the war.

I had thought that but it is worth looking at the closest aircraft to the camera in the third picture I've uploaded.

Mhm. Have look on the photos on RAF-112-Squadron.org. At least one photo (tomahawks.jpg) suggests that not all spinners were painted, probably some were left in the camo colours. So Tony could be quite right with Middle Stone.

On a picture of AN218 from War Pictorial News #29 it looks like the spinner is painted in the *darker* one of the camo colours:

Finally finished this one, with thanks to you all for your input. I settled on mid stone for the spinner in the end, I asked Airfix why white, they couldn't access the research to tell me, perhaps it is (was) with Modelzone, who commissioned the kit?

Careful when interpreting colour from B/W pictures.

Some of the films reacted very different to red and yellow, not providing the shade of grey you would expect.

Yes, I think the best we can hope for, in the absence of better evidence, is an educated guess. Whilst I think Middle Stone is a plausible option, I wouldn't put it higher than that.

If I were the pilot I would possibly done my own thing as far as some of that stuff is concerned so who really knows what was possible back then
