My second chopper.

March 20, 2022Its the old Dragon kit, box art looks great but lots of details lacking when you get into the build.2
March 20, 2022That's 1/144 scale for you!3
March 20, 2022The parts are nicely moulded and little flash to clean up.4
March 20, 2022Cockpit detail was sparse, to say the least! As everything is rather visible through the canopy glass I added seat protection to the sides and rear of the seats using card stock from my old business cards.5
March 20, 20226
March 20, 2022Instrument panel fabrication7
March 20, 2022Panels & instruments installed.8
March 20, 2022I couldn't fit the canopy because of interference from the fuselage top......9
March 20, 2022So decided to cut the offending area - this also allowed me to open up the engine intakes later.10
March 20, 2022Canopy now fits perfectly (I had dipped it in Pledge/Klear earlier to ensure maximum clarity).11
March 20, 2022Drilling out the upper air intakes in progress.12
March 20, 2022Opening up exhaust diffusers.13
March 20, 2022Another missing auxiliary cooling hole14
March 20, 2022Filled the gap and reattached the piece removed earlier.15
March 20, 2022masking the canopy using my usual method - foil from soup/sauce flavor cube with inner waxed layer removed to expose adhesive sided foil.16
March 20, 2022Acrylic filler applied.17
March 20, 2022After painting, clearcoating, applying the few decals and another coat of dulled Pledge/Klear I started detailing the panel lines.18
March 20, 2022Finish wasn't particularly dull so I used lots of weathering pigment to get a bit closer to the desired look.19
March 20, 2022Cleaned the canopy glass of foil adhesive with alcohol.20
March 20, 2022This is the look I was after ?21
March 20, 2022IR jammer turret added. By this point in the build I had decided OOB would look pretty sparse, so the scratchbuilding commenced.22
March 20, 2022Drilled more holes for rotor links and Air Data System arms.23
March 20, 2022Runners from brass photo-etch sets utilised for the rotor links.24
March 20, 2022Rotor links fixed in place; rather fiddly so lots of patience is required!25
March 20, 2022More drilling.26
March 20, 2022Various sensors and aerial added.27
March 20, 2022Also fabricated a front screen wiper.28
March 20, 2022ADS arms ready for fixing - lots of cyano used for all the extra bits.29
March 20, 2022ADS Sensors coming along nicely.30
March 20, 2022You need a steady hand and good eye for this!31
March 20, 2022The missing sensors........32
March 20, 2022Another dive into the PE sets found appropriate parts33
March 20, 2022The naked gun! Definitely doesn't look ok, so more wire fettling is required.34
March 20, 2022Looking better, also added the wire cutters to the landing gear.35
March 20, 202236
March 20, 202237
March 20, 202238
March 20, 202239
March 20, 202240
March 20, 202241
March 20, 202242
March 20, 202243
March 20, 202244
March 21, 2022Here's the Havoc for comparison - the tail rotor went MIA during one of the intercontinental moves ?45
March 21, 2022Mil-28 was built in the early 90's, all gloss Humbrol, no Klear coats but at least by then I was using Micro Set/Micro Sol.46
March 21, 2022I wasn't really into weathering back then, let's just say it dropped in from an airshow display ?47
March 21, 2022Two variations on the same theme, in the end!48
March 21, 2022That's it, folks!

Album info
It's the old and not-so-detailed Dragon kit which I bought many decades ago to sit beside the Havoc in my "Red Storm Rising" collection.
Planned to just do a quick OOB exercise, but as it progressed I couldn't resist adding here and there!
