“Hookland” is a lost English county which exists in our collective imagination as a repository of folk horror and neo folklore. Originated by author David Southwell it is an open source literary framework for developing a shared artwork and mythos.
In this diorama I will be building a mid 50s Gloster Meteor which has experienced a forced landing in the county, only to be fixed by a collection of the county’s supernatural inhabitants, and upgraded and redecorated in ways that resonate with both Quatermass and Dr John Dee.
Southwell has provided me with some interesting background material on how modelling is part of Hookland’s imaginary popular culture, including how comics from the county took a sharp turn into the wyrd and the supernatural , which then led to the county’s model manufacturers releasing models of haunted spitfires among other classic aircraft. I will be drawing on these ideas to show a Meteor which is infused with occult power to counter the threat of fascism.
Should be a right laugh!
In modelling terms I am using an Airfix 1/48 Gloster and probably some Airfix cars. .
