A-7D Corsair II USAF Vietnam

The A-7D is a single-seat, tactical close air support aircraft derived from the U.S. Navy’s A-7. The first A-7D made its initial flight in April 1968, and deliveries of production models began in December 1968. When A-7D production ended in 1976, LTV had delivered 459 to the U.S. Air Force.
A-7D Corsair II aircraft arrived at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand in October 1972 during the Vietnam War. The aircraft were deployed primarily from the 353d and 356th Tactical Fighter Squadrons, 354th Tactical Fighter Wing at Myrtle Beach AFB, South Carolina. At Korat, the mission of the A-7D was to replace the A-1 Skyraiders for the "Sandy" ground rescue mission for pilots shot down over enemy territory in Vietnam, as well as to replace the F-100 Super Sabre in the Army air-ground support role on the battlefield.
In March 1973, PACAF activated the 3d Tactical Fighter Squadron/388th TFW at Korat and most of the 353d's A-7Ds were transferred to the new permanent squadron. 3d TFS aircraft were tail-coded "JH". This was the only A-7D unit assigned outside of the United States on a permanent basis.
A second A-7D squadron, consisting of aircraft from the 355th TFS at Myrtle Beach AFB, along with aircraft from the 354th & 358th TFS, Davis-Montanan AFB, AZ and 74th TFS, England AFB, LA were deployed to Korat on a rotating basis from March 1973 until April 1974. While at Korat, the Davis-Montanan and England AFB aircraft were attached to the 354th TFW (Deployed), and tail coded "MB".
With the closure of Korat RTAFB in 1975, the A-7D aircraft of the 3d TFS were reassigned back to the United States to either active-duty or Air National Guard squadrons.
