UH-1H Iroquois "Huey"
Operator: NASA
Location: Kennedy Space Center, Florida (USA)
Timeframe: 1995-1999
Personal interest:
This model represents a NASA UH-1H used to perform local area safety and security sweeps prior to every space launch. I delivered the weather briefings for these crews on a regular basis. The UH-1H crews would look for people entering restricted areas (land, sea and air) and ensure they evacuated those areas prior to a launch for their safety. Most often people were in a restricted area unknowingly; other times, people entered a restricted area to get a better view of a launch. Occasionally protestors would attempt to prevent a launch knowing it would not occur if an area restricted for safety was occupied.
