A man of action until the day he died, 2 Lt George Welch won the DSC for his actions at Pearl Harbour,Hawaii in a P40B Hawk on the day the Japanese attacked (Dec 7 1941). He shot down 3 Aichi Vals and a Mitsubishi Zero.
Flying a P-39 Airacobra, he shot down 2 Vals and a Zero on Dec 7 1942 (first anniversary of Pearl Harbour) in New Guinea.
Between 21 Jun and 2 Sep 1943 flying a P-38H, he shot down 9 Japanese aircraft, 2 Zeros, 3 Ki-61 Tonys, 3 Ki-43 Oscars and a Ki-46 Dinah.
Due to malaria, Welch's combat tours came to an end after 348 missions. He resigned his commission and became a test pilot for North American Aviation.
As an instructor for North American Aviation during the Korean War, he shot down several MIG 15s. As he was not officially flying in combat, his "kills" were distributed amongst his students.
After the Korean War he returned to testing. While flying a F-100 Super Sabre he became the first to break the sound barrier with this type of aircraft on May 25 1953.
On Oct 12 1954, test flying a F-100A-1-NA Super Sabre, his aircraft crashed during a 7G pull out at Mach 1.5. On arrival at hospital, he was pronounced dead.
