These guys are mostly made to snap-fit. And glue is needed only if you'd like to get a better fit or to remove a seam line or something like that. Painting is more or less similar to an aircraft with preshading, postshading, topcoating, decaling, weathering etc etc. Some of these guys have a lot of parts. This one for instance had 28 sprues (if you count all of them), with about the normal (I'd say compared to an aircraft) part count per sprue, about 30-40.
