5th Armored Brigade/ Guards Armored Division

Sherman V, 2nd Battalion, Irish Guards Regiment, Guards Armored Division, Normandy, August 1944. Prior to the invasion of France in June 1944, 5th Armored Brigade was issued Sherman V medium tanks and Sherman VC Firefly tanks (17 PDR version). Here we see "Black Sod" ready for action closing the Falaise Gap.

Tanks has a very weathered whitewash but retains the disruptive camo on the end of the gun barrel. The Reichwald is a forested region along the West of the Rhine River, which was cleared for the launching of Operation Veritable, the crossing of the Rhine in March 1945.
