Airfix Bismarck

I painted this to look like the Bismarck as it was immediately before being sunk. The diagonal black and white stripes on the hull and superstructure had been painted over, as had the swastikas. Some of the detail on the kit is a bit lacking, so this is only an approximation of what it actually looked like. The top of the hull was painted with SMS Kure Grey, SMS German Grey for the boot and SMS German Red Brown for the bottom of the hull. Superstructure is SMS Dark Sea Grey. Decks are Tamiya Deck Tan with a wash of SMS Brown oil based wash. The dark grey decks are Humbrol RLM Grey and the 15" gun barrels and tops of the smaller turrets are Humbrol Tank Grey. 

 

 

 

 

Grey cotton was used for the rigging. This was tricky to put on as the masts are very thin and bendy, and there are no attachment points on anything. 

 

 

I somehow lost the 4 horizontal AA guns (I think they must have been attached to a bit of sprue that I threw out). I made 4 new ones from brass rod with a tiny bit of copper wire on the back end of the barrels. 

I very carefully painted some canopy frames and crosses on the tiny plane.
