Album info
On the morning of January 1, 1945, 23-year-old Michel, a fighter pilot from 16./JG53 took to the skies, on his first and only, as it later turned out, combat mission as part of "Operation Bodenplatte", the Luftwaffe's last offensive operation of the war.
The main objective was to strike 16 Allied airfields and destroy as many aircraft on the ground as possible. However, to achieve their goals, German pilots first had to survive Allied air cover and ground anti-aircraft batteries.
When his unit (IV./JG53) reached the target of its expedition - American artillery and AA positions near Waldweistroff, on the Franco-German border - Gefreiter Alfred Michel's Bf 109 G-14 "Blue 2" was hit by .50-caliber shells that damaged the engine, forcing it to land on its belly in a nearby field.
Michel emerged unscathed, except for a nasty blow to the head, and immediately tried to flee across the field into the nearby woods. Several warning series were sent in his direction - at the sight of which Gefr. Michel immediately stopped and sat down to wait for the men of the 90th Infantry Division who had arrived on the scene.
Upon examination of his aircraft, it turned out that he had not even had time to use his cannons mounted on the plane.
