I do models for two reasons. The first is to learn the history of the object and how it fits into history in general. The second reason is that I have had uncontrollable shaking in my hands since I was a boy (8 years old to be exact). Working with models helps me control them or at least try to exercise them out.
I am a physicist / amature astronomer /teacher by trade.
