After invading the Baltic States in the Fall of 1939, The Soviet Army attempted to push the Finns back from their border in the Leningrad area and create a buffer. The area was heavily forested with many lakes and few roads along which the Finns had created strong defensive fortifications in depth. Despite vast Soviet superiority in men and equipment, the Finns held their territory and the Red army was dealt an embarrassing defeat before withdrawing in the Spring of 1940. The Finnish Army captured large quantities of weapons and tanks which they would put to use in the 1941-44 Continuation War.
