Space 1999 Eagle with Laboratory Pod and Booster
1
February 26, 2025Started, as usual, with the cockpit. Masked off the part that were to stay white.2
February 26, 2025Primed with One-Shot Sand but......3
February 26, 2025My reference photo is more "70's beige" than that color so....4
February 26, 2025Sprayed with Vallejo Sand (Ivory) which is a closer match.5
February 27, 2025Back wall painted, much neater than last time. You can't see it in the photo but the 'padding' across the middle and around the top has been painted with gloss varnish.6
February 27, 2025Made a start on the pilots too. Not looking forward to the faces !7
March 2, 2025Sprayed the back of one set of windows with Black one-shot primer and masked off the front on both sets.8
March 2, 2025Glued the windows in using Revell Contacta Clear.9
March 2, 2025Moved on the the pipes staring with the "backbone". Very little cleanup needed on this model, the last time I built it I really needed the seam remover tool but this time it's much less to do. That's a good thing 😄10
March 2, 2025Service pods assembled, seams filled and cleaned up and more pipes!11
March 2, 2025Service pods are fully assembled with the side parts and the connector to the Command module on the front one. No extra pipes to the engines like on the Transporter Eagle, I checked the instructions about 8 times to make sure I hadn't missed a step 😄12
March 2, 2025The side cages for the Service Pods have been assembled as well.13
March 2, 2025Pilots painted and glossed. I'm still no better at faces !14
March 2, 2025Pilots get their decals and are Satin Coated. They're done.15
March 2, 2025Glued onto the back wall and the back wall glued into the back part of the Command Module.16
March 2, 2025Command module assembled. Hours of fun sorting out that seam to come, that's a job for next weekend 😉17
March 8, 2025Mixed up some sprue goo and used that to fill the seam.18
March 8, 2025Sanded back and looking good.19
March 8, 2025Start of the Laboratory pod assembly.20
March 8, 2025Used the sprue goo again and filled the gaps in the sides.21
March 8, 2025Outriggers assembled and ready to fit.22
March 8, 2025Fitted the outriggers. These needed a good push to get them on all the way over the lip on the 'roof'. Once that was done they fit the angle perfectly.23
March 8, 2025Underside of the Lab module with all the greeblies fitted24
March 8, 2025Assembled the pipework for the engines. Was a bit too heavy handed with this bit and ended up snapping some of the pipe lugs pushing it all down. Rescued with more glue 😄25
March 8, 2025The 4 tanks have seams along the middle, this side was easy to fill with sprue goo and sand back but....26
March 8, 2025The other side has a pipe running right next to the seam so I'm trying plastic putty on this side to see if I can trim that back easier than trying to get sanding sticks in there.27
March 9, 2025Assembled all the Engine assemblies including the directional thrusters for the sides of the landing gear pods and the Laboratory module and the big engines for the booster. Time for the first paint of the build 😄28
March 9, 2025Primed the lot of them with Vallejo Gloss Black primer. The baffles for the big engines will be matt black so they'll be primed along with the landing gear29
March 13, 2025Engines get a basecoat of Vallejo Metal Colour Duraluminium then a gloss coat to protect. Not going to bother with metaliser this time as you can't really put any clear coats over that.30
March 13, 2025Side pods are assembled.31
March 13, 2025Feet, landing gear and various bits ready for black primer.32
March 15, 2025Primed all the feet etc. with Mig One-Shot black.33
March 15, 2025Basecoats on the feet and landing gear is Dark Sea Grey. Landing gear struts get a coat of chrome then glossed. Sensors for the command module get a coat of Metallic Aluminium then glossed. I left the engine baffles as primer and just gave them a Matt coat.34
March 15, 2025Feet and landing gear drybrushed with Metallic Steel then assembled. These are done 🙂35
March 15, 2025Added streaking to the inside of all the big engine bells with Smoke oil paint. I didn't bother with the directional thrusters, I'll leave those as is. These now get a week to dry.36
March 17, 2025Spine booster has been assembled but I'll keep that in bits for painting.37
March 17, 2025Main Eagle parts all primed with Mig One-Shot Grey. Desk is full 😄38
March 17, 2025Booster parts are all primed too.39
March 23, 2025All the parts to make the booster have been basecoated with White Grey, Orange and German Red Brown. The circular bottles were left in primer grey. All glossed with Pledge so ready for assembly/decals but I'm not sure yet which order to do that in.40
March 24, 2025Partially assembled and ready for decals. I won't put the "torpedoes" on yet as they need a decal on the bottom of them so easier to do that when they're not glued on.41
March 31, 2025Made a start on the decals on the booster module and finished off assembly once the "torpedoes" had their decals. I don't like the look of the stripe decals to go on the pipework (too fiddly) so may skip those.42
April 5, 2025Completed the decals and gave the whole thing a clear coat with Satin Varish43
April 5, 2025Fitted the booster engines.44
April 5, 2025and then the baffles45
April 5, 2025This was the most difficult thing I've ever done !! How fiddly were fitting these clips. Really glad that's over, an hour of my life I'm not geeting back with screws going "ping" all over the place 😄46
April 5, 2025Spine booster done 🙂47
April 5, 2025Command module is basecoated with White-Grey48
April 5, 2025Forward service pod is basecoated as well49
April 15, 2025Time for some decals. Command module has been glossed and I've started with the kit decals for the anti-glare in front of the windows.50
April 15, 2025Weathering decals have been added - top view51
April 15, 2025Weathering decals have been added - one side52
April 15, 2025Weathering decals have been added - bottom view. Nice Letraset bathtub 😄53
April 15, 2025Weathering decals have been added - the other side.54
April 19, 2025All the front end parts have been washed with Blue-Grey enamel wash, cleaned up then matt coated. Ready for assembly.55
April 19, 2025Command module glued to the front service module. Sensors and engines fitted as well.56
April 19, 2025Masking removed from the windows and the pilots can get a look out 😄57
April 20, 2025Next set of subassemblies have been basecoated White-Grey and glossed ready for decals and wash.

Always thought it was weird that in season 1 they wore environmental suits in the cockpit (I guess in case of life support failure, and too bad for anyone in the passenger compartment), but in season 2 they piloted wearing their regular clothing.

Album info
As I enjoyed building the Eagle Transporter with Rescue Pod so much (Build diary: Eagle Transporter | Album by Squack (1:48)), I bought the Laboratory Pod variant just afterwards then later the Booster to go on the back. So here we go again and hopefully I can use what I did last time well (and not so well !) to make a better model this time.
