Album info

The Spiteful was the ultimate development of the Supermarine Spitfire but was so different it was given a new name. It retained the same engine and tail surfaces of the Spitfire Mk.24 and the same basic fuselage shape but had a new laminar flow wing and wide-track, inward-retracting undercarriage. It was an excellent aeroplane but obsolete by the time it entered production. The few that were made went straight into storage as the RAF converted to jet-powered fighters. The Spiteful's wing and and undercarriage were used for the Attacker, Supermarine's first jet aircraft.

I have long been fascinated by the Spiteful and after making a vac-formed version in 1/72 scale many years ago, I jumped at the chance of building the Trumpeter one in 1/48 scale.

This was a fairly basic kit compared to the Trumpeter Wyvern I previously built, but it went together well. The construction steps in the instructions were a little strange but I followed my usual sequence. The kit included an incorrect mast aerial but no pitot tube, but these were easily remedied. The national markings in the decal sheet were far too small, but my spares box provided suitable replacements.
