This Modelcraft kit is an exceptionally tough build. I've had to do many things much differently than I'd do in a normal kit. Wings had to be thinned, then one side had a huge gap to get the correct dihedral. Much of the panel lines had to be rescribed and detail like vents will have to be drilled out. Looks like I'll also need new wheels (bigger), new radar pod (kit one is WAY off), and new props.

M_M - Thanks for the offer, but I'm too far in to make much use of the photo-etch.
Michael - Yes, it's been a slow burn on this one since early last year. Mixing up some Aves Apoxie Sculpt right now to fill the wing gap.

I agree, hang in there it is a cool plane. It sure would be nice if someone did a decent kit of it. I had heard that, that kit was bad.

Added a pic to show the size difference between a P-51D and the much larger F-82 airframe. These monsters were the last call for piston engined fighters. A few years of service in combat and then the jets took over. Nice way to go out though...
7 February 2019, 01:06

Filled the wing gaps and rescribed panel lines, then primed. Also ordered a new radar pod from Shapeways today.
11 February 2019, 21:24

Thanks mates! My new radar pod shipped late yesterday and should arrive by Friday. Now to work on that landing gear...
13 February 2019, 21:44

Lookin' good 🙂 I have no clue about weathering and camo... it terrifies me, but looks cool... This plane like a neat design too!
16 February 2019, 05:16

Radar pod didn't show today so I painted the base color in the wheel wells. That and working on the Turbo Mustang...
16 February 2019, 05:18

Chris I'm going to have to take pointers from you on this one, she's going to be all gloss black...
16 February 2019, 05:21

That's a cool project and real modelling 🙂
Keep going - it Looks very good 👍
16 February 2019, 06:46

One new gear strut completed with larger wheel and tire. Original shown for size comparison.
16 February 2019, 17:00

Quite difference in the size of the wheels! Nice build so far, Nathan!
The original prototype recently flew again after a lengthy rebuild...

That restoration is where I got the best pics of the landing gear. I'm hoping to see that one fly since I live within 3 miles of the second largest airshow in the USA.
16 February 2019, 17:28

3D printed radar pod arrived. Just look at the size difference when compared to the kit part.
16 February 2019, 19:21

The surface is a bit rough on the new pod. Put on 2 coats of Mr. Surfacer 500. I'll try to get some pics up later this evening.
17 February 2019, 20:39

Started drilling out the cowl grilles while waiting for the 5th coating of Mr. Surfacer to dry on the radar pod.
18 February 2019, 22:09

Nathan... What is the purpose of the various Mr. Surfaces? I never really understood it... The cowl grilles look great! Thumb drills are amazing, so tiny.
19 February 2019, 00:21

It's a liquid filler. The 500 is the thickest one I have and usually works in one application. This 3D material is like a sponge!
19 February 2019, 00:31

Finally got everything smoothed out on the 3D printed radar pod. I think next time I'll pay for the finer detail frosted material. It is more like regular plastic.
19 February 2019, 04:06

Thanks Thomas! That radar pod was way more work than it needed to be! The landing gear are almost complete, I just need to make the landing lights. Now on to the props. I was hoping for an easy fix with the Lone Star resin parts, but he is months behind on orders and has temporarily stopped all orders until April. Oh well...
19 February 2019, 13:15

Thanks Hans, that's definitely a better way to say it. I tried an explanation in a PM to Chris. Also I must apologize to you as I had to scavenge my Hasegawa F-4 to fix the landing gear on this kit. Not to worry though I replaced them with the SAC Metal ones!
19 February 2019, 17:34

Looking good Nathan, you are whipping that puppy into shape.
20 February 2019, 00:57

Thanks Clifford! Did some shading in the wheel wells tonight. I'm at a stand still until my prop parts arrive.
21 February 2019, 03:10

Landing gear completed with the exception of landing lights. Did some priming of the resin seats and tires. Started more color on the gear doors. Working on the cockpits today...
23 February 2019, 14:48

Painted the seats. Left an original kit seat in the picture for comparison. Should complete the cockpits tomorrow and hopefully painting the landing gear too. A bit of a bummer that I just noticed one of the control sticks was not completely formed so I'll have to make one. You are too kind Clifford!
24 February 2019, 00:08

That is some very impressive work, can't wait to see her done.
24 February 2019, 00:59

Thanks mates. Your kind words are keeping me going on this one. I think my new prop blades will arrive Monday. Also decided what the heck and had some exhausts 3D printed. I really hope the Squadron vac canopies fit because the kit ones look really bad!
24 February 2019, 04:01

Thanks Stephan! Finally working on props! Tires painted.
25 February 2019, 19:40

The tires look amazing Nathan, will add a very classy touch to an amazing model.
26 February 2019, 02:04

Thanks Clifford! Slight setback. My 3 year old son grabbed the vac canopies off the hobby table and crushed one. Was able to order another set off of Ebay... did work more on props and painting the landing gear last night.
28 February 2019, 16:41

Yes indeed. I'll get a dry run, then I will use the pristine set for the final work.
28 February 2019, 16:56

3D printed exhausts arrived today. Kit one on the top / replacement on the bottom.
2 March 2019, 19:57

Its funny that all the parts that made the kit the F-82G have been replaced - Props / Exhaust / Radar Pod. I hope the decals work...
3 March 2019, 16:18

Ugly kids week at Nathans😉 But fantastic modelling skills and all the patience needed for this like this shown.
Looks really very good for that base kit Nathan... Congrats
5 March 2019, 20:32

I need an easy kit after this and the Turbo Cavalier! Thanks for the kind words Daniel.
5 March 2019, 22:26

Props completed. During research for the Aeroprop decals I realized they are counter-rotating. Glad I noticed before any glue was applied. Thanks Chris & Clifford!
6 March 2019, 02:12

Thanks mates! Working on my replacement vac canopies today plus work on integrating kit parts to them. After that it's time for some gloss black!
8 March 2019, 14:47

Thanks Erik! Painted up a pair of P-61 fuel tanks to use for this build. Also started the fitting of the vac canopies.
19 March 2019, 00:47

I think having the original ones crunched by my little one turned out good. I was able to make all my mistakes with the damaged canopies.
19 March 2019, 01:06

Thanks mates! Hoping to get more time in tonight to at least get both canopies affixed.
19 March 2019, 23:02

Added a pic of the Squadron vac canopy with the modified kit part installed. Forgot to add during my last post.
27 March 2019, 19:07

Thanks Clifford & Jos!
Liquid masked the canopies. Paint will be coming shortly.
2 May 2019, 18:05

Thanks Clifford & Chris!
I just noticed a small spot that needs some more coverage, then its decal time. Chris, I think the future is really going to help the finish on this one.
3 May 2019, 20:02

I'm really surprised how well the Modelcraft kit decals are going down. I was expecting the worst...
6 May 2019, 18:34

Thanks mates! Decals are nearly complete. Just the right-side fuselage to go.
7 May 2019, 12:31

I just put the landing gear on and was so proud of myself, then I realized they were on backwards. I had to just sit back and chuckle. 😛
11 May 2019, 23:30

Wow, those decals on black look flawless! What chemistry did you use - I am still learning 🙂
12 May 2019, 06:20

Calling this one done. My make-shift landing light broke and I'm going to make another, but the rest of the plane is done. Completed pictures can be found here:

13 May 2019, 17:58

*Sits down in anticipation of another nudity in modelling fight 😛 * Super well done mate!
13 May 2019, 18:15

Hmmm that's a good shot Hans, some more scratching would be nice. That tail insignia looks much lower too.
13 May 2019, 19:27

That's an easy fix though! The insignia is sealed in... I think the crew on this thing were paint happy. I've seen it with the red stripes and without. Also the spinner blue. In some shots it looks REALLY light, and others way darker. I'll bet it was both. The weathering has me scratching my head. I'm so used to doing things in matte that the gloss has thrown me for a loop. I'm really just glad the gloss went down without looking too horrible. I'll come back to it like I do with every other kit and dirty it up a bit more 🙂
13 May 2019, 20:14

I'm not against scantily clad women... at least not as often as I'd like to be.
13 May 2019, 21:05

Thanks mates! Clifford - Yeah I'm amazed at how well those old kit decals went down. I was expecting them to fall apart, then ordering an aftermarket set.
