As the Panzerspähwagen (6rad) had unsufficient cross-country performance army authorities requested an 8rad all wheel drive and steering armoured recce vehicle. Büssing introduced Schwerer Panzerspähwagen (8rad), later named Sd.Kfz. 231, 232 (Fu, radio), 233 (7.5 cm gun) and 263. From 1935 to 1943 nearly 950 Schwere Panzerspähwagen were built.
