cphinneyAfter getting back into the hobby after 30+ years I chose a handful of "Basic" kits to build to get back in the feel of things. The first three I built were all 1/700, the Tamiya USS Hornet CV-8, Aoshima USS North Carolina BB-55, and Hasegawa USS Alabama BB-60. I will leave comments on all of them.
I personally would spend the extra money on another manufactures version of this ship. This kit is very dated and I fought the whole deck placement and details over and over. Its fit is horrible, I'm sure if everything goes just right things turn out great but its very tough with so many parts that ultimately make the deck and settle it in place. I also have the Yorktown by Tamiya and I don't look forward to it given its basically the same. I guess the lesson learned is I will probably crazy glue the deck pieces in place as the first step. I have been applying primer at earlier stages but will likely wait till I have the entire hull and deck where I want it before placing primer or paint. The next issue that might be unavoidable is the deck guns being just 50 cal are simply a thin piece laid on a cradle, although I found easier than the 20 cals on the Alabama, inherently required a lot of excess plastic cement. I know modeling is about putting things together but I really don't see a reason the deck has to be something like 15 pieces. I don't think it really adds much more than frustration. It may seem boring, but in the end one molded piece would of been fine and let me detail otherwise. Again, I would pass on this kit and search out a better version.

The Hasegawa 1/700 kit is dated and like the Tamiya USS Hornet would be best served to redo the entire kit. Don't get me wrong, its a beautiful build but there is a little special work you may want to do. The eye appeal of this model is really nice. It's a beautiful ship and mostly it goes together well. the big pieces are no issues. The problems are all the little AA guns are just glued flat to the deck which is a recipe to have them continually getting knocked off during the build process as well as I assume over time in addition to simply being a pain in the ass to put on. I do have the sister ship USS South Dakota also by Hasegawa and plan on buying aftermarket 20mm AA guns and drilling them in. Overall, its a great looking ship and I felt a bit cheated by the poor design of the AA guns. Another issue I can kind of understand but you will have to live with is on the bow there are 2 molded circles where other variants must have twin 40mm guns but the Alabama does not, it really is somewhat annoying. I wouldn't avoid buying this kit given it is very affordable, just be aware it's flaws and either accept them or plan around them.

Of those three kits the Aoshima was by far the more user friendly and I really look forward to also building the sister ship I purchased at the same time also by Aoshima, the USS Washington BB-56, which I assume is basically the same kit. Parts in this kit fit well and I didn't have to battle with it. Little things like the AA guns had holes placed for them (unlike the Hasegawa USS Alabama) so they were about as easy as you can hope for. I strongly recommend this kit for modelers wanting to get into the 1/700 scale world.

cphinneyOlder kit. It can be frustrating due to poor fitting parts. It's a OK budget project but if I were building it again I would spend the extra few $ to get another kit.
