MarkSome confusion on 55-3604. The instructions state it was part of the 416th TFS, but the markings on the nose are definitely for Lt. Col. Harold E. Comstock who was the commander of the 481st TFS -- and did fly 55-3604 when it was assigned to the 481st -- yet those are the tail markings for the 416th TFS. Online photos show the aircraft in both tail markings.

MarkAeroMaster transposed the last two digits of "Duchess of Durham IV"s tail number. It should be 42-10463. I also corrected the spelling of Captain Taylor's nickname to ZACK, and corrected the rank of Flight Officer (F/O) for Cecil O. Dean. (He was still a F/O when flying the P-40, however he was later commissioned and flew the P-47.) Other additions from my research. (From multiple Checkertail Clan references online, and in print.)

MarkAeroMaster transposed the last two digits of "Duchess of Durham IV"s tail number. It should be 42-10463. Additionally, "Trixie" was a P-40F-15-CU, NOT a P-40L. (Which it is why it was one of the few P-40s of the 325th FG that was not painted in Dark Earth, and Sand as it came from a different lot of aircraft assigned to the group.) I also corrected the spelling of Captain Taylor's nickname to ZACK, and added the rank of Flight Officer (F/O) for Cecil O. Dean. (He was later commissioned.) MarkThis is perhaps the most poorly researched set of F-106 decals I have ever seen. First off, four of the aircraft depicted ARE USEABLE as is: 59-0037, 58-0783, 59-0031, and 59-0061. However, and starting with the most obvious, the B-model, 59-0165 has the incorrect spelling of CENTER on the external tank markings, Folks, we don't spell it like that in the USA. Not sure if one can find replacements. Second, the tail markings for 57-2457 were obviously taken from a faded, color slide of that design. The arrow was actually a bright yellow. Next, the markings for the 87th FIS aircraft 59-0088 is not correct on two obvious points, The nose are "Jack the Gripper" was used during William Tell 1972, and only for a short time thereafter. The markings on the tail show the TAC insignia, but the 87th and all FISs were under the Aerospace Defense Command at the time. Also, the 87th had very specific markings for the external tanks during WT72, and can be seen in many publications. The ones on this sheet are incorrect. Lastly, on the 84th FIS aircraft 57-2497, the ADC insignia should be on the right side of the vertical stab. Possible to fix this one.

MarkRegistration number on kit decal sheet is spurious. N705PS was indeed a PSA registration, but it was for a DC-9-32 (c/n 45846), and definitely not a PSA MD-80. (N924PS was the first MD-81 delivered to PSA in November, 1980.)

MarkNote that the command stripes on the aft fuselage of 56-1009 (48th FIS) should be green to match the stars on the vertical stabilizer. They are incorrectly painted black on this decal set. Additionally, ALL show the red, turbine warning stripe too far aft. Check your real references! (Also RE: 57-0892, Travis AFB has always been in California, not Texas.)

MarkNote that the box, and instructions indicate 72-0176 is a Louisiana ANG aircraft. This is incorrect. The 74th TFS/23rd TFG was, and most definitely still is an active, USAF unit. At the time they flew the A-7 they were stationed at England AFB, LA, and I believe the researcher(s) got confused over that, and hence their mistakes with the kit. (The tail code "EL" stood for England Louisiana.)

MarkThe instructions incorrectly say to paint the aircraft in FS16373 which is a glossy finish. I believe this was a typo from Experts-Choice, as what we call AMC Gray is actually FS36173; a flat finish. (Former USAF KC-135E/R/T Instructor Crew Chief.)

MarkIf you find this old set, do not use the nose art for Capt Joe Rogers' P-51D. (Yes, he called them P-51s; not F-51s.) Before Col. Rogers died he passed on to a friend that the nose art in this set, "Is not accurate at all." He generally liked the Tamiya presentation of his aircraft with minor corrections to the paint job. Specifically, the glare panel and canopy frame were black. (There are a couple photos on the internet that show this.) Happy modeling!

MarkThis was a grand mistake by the original Squadron when they were producing the Encore series of kits. This is NOT a P-40E. It is a rebagged ERTL, LONG-TAIL, P-40F, kit #8795. When it was originally offered by Squadron I purchased one not knowing this. (Mine is #323 of 400.) Upon delivery I opened it and immediately noticed their mistake. I emailed Squadron, and the guy who was their Master Modeler (or whatever he called himself) admitted they knew it was NOT an E-model, and laughed it off saying it will be a great collector's edition. (What a maroon.) Anyway, it's a decent kit, but cannot be built as their included instructions explain. Mine is eventually going to be a P-40F from the Checkertail Clan. Probably a 318th Fighter Squadron aircraft.
