Hi Chris, what are the dark red areas under the front fuselage? Some kind of cover for the guns?

The cannons were covered with doped fabric to prevent salt and dirt from entering the barrels and jamming them. The first time the guns were fired the fabric would be torn away leaving the guns free to fire
