with the Mistel, was the carrier plane disposable when the 109's and 190's launched ?
I am assuming this was a range extending device for the fighters ?
cool model btw 🙂

cool link, so it was bunker busting bomb built out of desperation

Yes, Choppa, it was a flying bomb, piloted from the fighter which theoretically could return for another mission. There were not many successful raids. I think one bridge was destroyed, and one got through to the D-Day beachheads and sunk an old French warship that was being used as part of a mulberry harbour. One mission was intercepted by a Mosquito, the crew of which were surprised to see the fighter seperate and flee very fast - they were stripped out to save weight - while the bomber part flew on, eventually to crash in a field, causing a tremendous explosion.

cheers for the interesting back story on this weird wonder Dick.
Must have required a certain amount of bravery to fly such a thing.

Apparently it took most bravery to take off - one it was airborne it flew quite well if a little sluggish on the controls.

Landing in that configuration must have been a daunting prospect......
though I imagine that only happened during testing..

Cool Mistel, Dick!👍
@Choppa: the Mistel project was not more than an act of desperation. It was designed to penetrate heavily fortified targets - as if in that late stage of war attack was an option for Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe! In the end this development was used to destroy bridges that fell into the hands of the red army because the Wehrmacht was not able to blow it up in time. Most of the pilots did not return...
Just another sad story.

Sounds more dangerous than flying the Me163 !

They weren't designed to land together!

I realise that, but I can imagine someone might have had to attempt it during testing or a release failure perhaps 🙂

Release failure? I'd bail out!

me too but even that looks risky !!
I think you would have to pop the canopy, release the straps and push your feet hard against the stick and throttle so it chucks you out whilst the plane dives to the ground fast !!
Mind you I doubt I would get in it to begin with 🙂
