Making a diorama of a 747 from the movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1/200 scale using balsa wood dummy plane that is foil covered, weathered and then buried in the sand.

Thank you sir, my first foray into such an endeavour. I was supposed to use the blue 747, but didn't have the heart to wreck it so decided to copy it.

I am planning so. I have those little 1/200 figures from architectural models that I want to modify into the kids and then hack one into Cpt Walker. There is the iconic photo of kids on the wing and tail and Max looking at them in disbelief...that is the image the dio will project

I posted this WIP because one of the diorama books I have discussed showing your work and talking to others to get ideas and feedback. It mentioned how people will point stuff out and add to your work. So you are bang on Choppa Nutta with the elevator flap needing to be droopy downward and the other tail flap just a bit askew. That was kind of my test to see if it would get noticed from the photo. When I did the Star Wars diorama, one guy pointed out I missed adding a figure for the other director of the movie, so I researched him, made him and added him in. MORAL of the story is...show your work!!!!!

yep, feedback is good, especially critical feedback, it's critical to improvement ! 😄 😄 😄
don't forget the rudder lower portion slightly askew too😉

also, while I'm being detailed 😄
the leading edge of the elevators should be straight and yours has a bend near the root that needs filling or the elevator reshaping slightly to get that leading edge straight again 🙂
Pic 5 shows it well, unless of course you will be adding the fillet later ?
or have I missed something from the film ?

Anyhow, one last thought regarding the tin foil covering, to get rid of those wrinkles I've used a hard round handle and rubbed the surface till it flattens out, I've used tin foil covering before on cowls for RC aircraft 🙂

Anyhow, after your Star Wars Dio I reckon this will turn out very well too 🙂

Ok now you just suck 🙂 Just jesting. The wrinkles, pulled panels and such will add to the worn look of this plane being blasted by sand for a couple decades. At first, I was trying to get it all smooth, but the balsa substrate is too soft so it divots more than anything else. Then when I sandblasted all those edges with a dental micro etcher it gave her that rough, worn look. Will look into the elevator edges.

Yes, use "master blaster" for work. I will reshape those areas you mention...see exactly what I mean by showing your work. I did not see that shape difference right in front of my nose.

I straightened the elevators leading edge and redid the foil. Added a 'filet' curve as per Choppa and then Ca glued the tail assembly....still in glue jig but latest pic shows Choppa's adjustment. Have to reblast that area with sand.

Ya, it messes the foil up pretty good. Leaves a sandy feel on it as well...like coming home from the beach with sand in your shorts

Nice job Scott. I will ask you about the holes on the deck of the sub. They have different schemes square and circle, how i can make them. When progress of job comes to that level

In one of my photos I show the Tamiya tape marked with windows and doors in felt pen on the fuselage. Then just press with a blunt object to indent into the balsa. You could do the same with a tape form for your deck holes.
