And here we go, the finished result! F-104J Starfighter Aircraft number 672 in service with 201st Squadron, 2nd Air Wing, of the JASDF.
14 February 2019, 11:31

Uploaded a couple extra pictures showing it in the sunlight. 🙂

Dont pout!😉 In Germany its widely called a widowmaker due to the high rate of crashes in the early days of the F-104 in the Luftwaffe. But you have a beautiful Eiko. Whatever Eiko means!😉😉
15 February 2019, 13:33

"Eiko" is Japanese for "Glory" and is the nickname given to the F-104 Starfighter by the JASDF. It was very popular with the Japanese who suffered none of the crashes and accidents common to German Starfighters, perhaps because they used it properly as a pure interceptor.😉
15 February 2019, 13:56

Thanks! 🙂
I'm quite fond of the JASDF, and they have such lovely camouflage/marking schemes.
15 February 2019, 16:21

Thank you! I was.. I suppose you could say "enchanted" ? I hope that is the right word... anyway I saw a photograph of several JASDF F-104Js flying in formation, and just knew I had to build one.
It was this photograph actually:

Thank you! I am really pleased with this one, and happy to see myself improving. ^~^
15 February 2019, 19:44

I hope that is in a display case where every one can see it. As it's a beautiful job you have done here. 👍 🙂
15 February 2019, 20:02

No display case, just a dusty shelf in my tiny cramped room like all my other models...
15 February 2019, 21:12

Yes, although I have become sadly dissatisfied with my older models, Wish I could magically repaint them up to my current standard.
16 February 2019, 07:21

Do you have access to Mr Muscle oven cleaner in a spray can. ? As that is amazing paint stripper.
There are a number of ways to remove old paint so that you can 'reclaim' older models.
Better than tossing them or wondering what to do with them.
I will look around and see what I can find for you that you may like. 😉
OR. Even ask the members here if they can help you in accessing something. 👍
16 February 2019, 07:30

It would destroy the decals and probably leak into the cockpit and destroy that too.
I'll probably just buy new versions of the kits in the future...
16 February 2019, 07:51

Hi Katya, nice work, beautiful painting. I like the JASDF-Fighter!
16 February 2019, 07:54

New decal sheets are easy to get. That would afford you the chance to do a different version. As for the cockpit, just dont hose that area down. Soak qtips in the oven cleaner and go at it like that. And if you really dont like them, then if you mess it up, no big loss. Just get the new kit as you wer eplanning in the first place.
16 February 2019, 15:01

Pick the one you like the absolute least. The one you look at and think, did I really do that? Use that one. You are going to replace it anyway. If you mess it up, no loss. But you have everything to gain from it and nothing to fear. 🙂
16 February 2019, 17:13

we all have been there... how many times i thought i would like that some of my models could go back magically to state they were when i got them out of the box, so i could spare them the pain of what I did to them, and my own pain in looking at them now 😛
different type of paints will require different removal methods, or more aggressive. i remember some tomcat i "perpetrated" 20+ years ago, with so much paint that probably only sulphuric acid could remove now.....
16 February 2019, 22:57

You do an amazing job though! All I ever managed was blobby messes.
17 February 2019, 11:09

Katya. Did you know that Augie is putting out a video, "For all you airbrush geeks. How to get better results with a hairy stick." She is the absolute 'crème de la crème' when it come to hand painting. 😉
17 February 2019, 12:01

I don't really want to go back to fully hand painting...
I can't even thin paint for the airbrush, that's why I use so much Vallejo.
17 February 2019, 12:22

I hate acrylics with a passion. 🙁
The paint starts to dry the millisecond it leaves the airbrush and creates that "Orange peel" effect. Just crap. ALL of the acrylics range.
I have only ever had my best results with 'enamel' paints.
17 February 2019, 12:29

I tried enamel though the airbrush, it was a horrifying disaster.
So now I exclusively use Vallejo Model Air acrylics, all my models nowadays are painted with them.
17 February 2019, 13:04

I have tried and tried to convert to 'convert' to acrylics many times ('hairy-stick' and airbrush) with only limited success - give me enamels and a 'hairy-stick' any day! 🙂 Just remember that each will find their own best way - we are, after all, individuals...are we not? (And Augie is 'Queen of the brush' any way!!!)
17 February 2019, 13:11

Wow thank you all, now I am bright red.
Its just practice... lots of practice and finding ways that work using scrap plastics.
For me it was as much finding right brushes to use as finding how best to control the brush.
17 February 2019, 18:23

I am with Katya on this one. I brush paint small stuff, but that is it. I bailed on brush painting almost as soon as I started. Masking and rattle cans worked great for me. Then I got an air brush. 😄
17 February 2019, 18:44

We grasshoppers have learned a great deal too over those 30+ years. 'To each his own'. ? 😉
17 February 2019, 19:39

Katya, there is no need to feel inexperienced, we're just old buggers that have had more practice. You'll be the same too Katya in time. Its a hobby so its supposed to be fun lol
17 February 2019, 19:51

LOL Katya, these other old farts make me feel the same way.😉
17 February 2019, 20:33

Katya. Remember, we ALL started without any experience once upon a time, and there is a lot of fun and achivement to be had in the learning - 'It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive' (and none of us ever really 'arrive'!). Back into my cell I think! 🙂
17 February 2019, 22:09

Derek, perfectly said.. no one is perfect, we all learn as we do this 🙂
17 February 2019, 22:29

I have to say also there's a place and a need to use hairy sticks and with different types of paint for different effects.
18 February 2019, 05:00

I do use brushes too, I just paint the majority now with airbrush.
18 February 2019, 07:38

Katya - And you are proving streets ahead of my own pathetic airbrush capabilities already (just can't handle the 'pressure' (pun), even after 50+ years modelling). Just keep on doin' what you're doin' - it's great to see! 👍😉
18 February 2019, 08:27

Vallejo paints are nice to airbrush - but the transition from airbrushing enamels to Vallejo took me one year 🙂
18 February 2019, 16:41

Katja, which vallejos you used for the F-104J? The new metal colours?
19 February 2019, 06:44

I used their "Cold War Silver Darts" metallic set, which included Aluminium, Gunmetal, Steel, Black Metallic, Silver, and Chrome.
I also used some black primer, white primer, and some red.
19 February 2019, 08:01

Katya, where did you get Vallejo's Cold War Silver Darts set. I have never seen it before, and I have an F-104 that I would like to try it on.
20 February 2019, 01:08

Clifford, I bought it on Amazon, they have a bunch of the Vallejo sets.

20 February 2019, 07:37

It includes a silver, that's what I used for the area near the back in between the two gunmetal sections.
20 February 2019, 09:21

Oh wow! That is a beautiful build. How I missed this I don't know.
10 January 2020, 14:37

Still as great as it ever was. Haven't seen you around for awhile, How have you been?
12 January 2020, 02:35

Was taking a break from models due to being burnt out and due to the cold of winter, and i'm currently recovering from major surgery. So I have been better...
12 January 2020, 13:32

Really fantastic "MARU-YONN"! (F-104J) beautiful natural metal paint.
12 January 2020, 14:30

take care, and I hope you have a quick and full recovery!
your prescription is relaxation, and lots of modelling😉
12 January 2020, 21:50

Came looking here after not seeing much on WT Live - Hope you are doing much better now, sounds as if you have had a tough time
7 March 2020, 19:35

Great to see you back on here 😉
I was missing your posts & wondering why you were AWOL
7 March 2020, 20:24

Ah well, I have not done any modelling for months... just been doing stuff with LEGO. Been taking a long break.
15 April 2020, 17:09

I hope the surgery went well and that you recover quickly! Welcome back. 🙂
