I followed the painting instructions in the kit. AFTERWARDS, I found a photo online of the actual plane represented which showed a more complete overpainting of dark IJN green. Oh, well!

Thank you! I followed the kit painting guide as to the location of the dark green and applied it with a Tamiya cotton swab to simulate camo added in the field.
