Thanks for the comments everyone. I used AK real colour lacquers for the black and green basecoat, then AK medium chipping fluid, followed by a white topcoat of a gunze aqueous white. As soon as the aqueous white was dry I attacked it with a wet toothbush.

Later I added a black panel line wash, some Abteilung 502 oils for general staining, and some thinned home mix sooty black brown colour for the exhaust and gun stain effects (I forget which paint I used for this).
