Album info

I was doing my second plane model in my newly started collection of captured American bombers of WWII. I ran into an issue with variants of the B 24 bomber, causing me to order a kit or two extra, until I got the variant I needed. I know it doesn't sound like a problem, since there are so many note worthy planes out there, but I was undecided over which one to do. at the moment it was the B 24 'Sunshine', the second B 24 to have been captured by the Germans, turned over to the KG 200. I had bought the older Revell 'Warbirds' kit, and it was waiting it's turn on the table. a friend and I were talking on the phone one day, and he mentioned seeing pictures of assembly planes. these are planes that were no longer reliable to go out on missions, so they were painted in wild camo and used to guide squadrons to their bombing missions. once close to the bomb site, they would leave the group and fly back to base, since they were mostly stripped of armament and unable to participate. looking them up, I was amazed to see what some of the camo schemes looked like, some can be purchased since aftermarket decals are available, as well as decal sheets for captured planes {I might add}. I decided to go out on a limb her and create my own assembly plane. of course, these plane flew around 1943, I had to order a decal sheet where the American insignia had the red border around it, since they were used in a very short window of time. I still need to finish the nose glass, but I took some gallery photos of how the camo looked as a whole on the plane. my avatar on other site is Popeye {hence the reason for the spinach can here}, and I was going to use a Popeye image for the nose art.....but I chose the eagle. I bought a decal sheet put out by Gofer racing {I may have misspelt the name}, and it was perfect for the subject.
