Finished! Some notes to this build:
Spending hours to add PE parts in the cockpit of a plane with a closed canopy makes me question my sanity - but it was very satisfying nevertheless.
It's a great kit. Tamiya.
I get better with the airbrush, I finally understand how to use varnish properly.
I've used AK markers quite a lot, they really work well for certain tasks.
I feel more and more that weathering is the fun part - and yet, I get too impatient at the end and tend to rush it.
Masking the canopy was difficult. I nearly destroyed it. But finally I found a method that works for me.

Definitely a nice way to make the display into more than a dust protection 👍

It was supposedly a car for the people only the people who originally paid for it never got one. Hitler used it as a way of financing his military build-up.

Thank you all. This build was an emotional rollercoaster. I was impressed by the details of this kit, but annoyed by the complicated engineering. Building the landing gear was no fun at all, to be honest. The raw paint job was really good in my eyes, but I completely ruined it with the gloss coat. I was about to throw it away. After a lot of touch ups and a matte coat my confidence came back, and in the end I am really quite happy with the result.
The weathering was pretty simple, just black and brown oil paint. Less was more in this case, I guess.

It is good that you persisted, the result proves you right. I would have guessed at least 1/48!

Having owned one for many years, I have to congratulate you on correctly identifying all the typical spots for rust 😀
Overall a very realistic build, you captured the real thing!

Thank you. It's a great kit, but because of my insufficient airbrushing skills I fought with it quite a bit. But well, it's a fighter, innit? 😁

No obvious airbrushing errors that I can see, the decals sank in nicely to the panel lines, nice chipping and weathering effects, and a beautiful base. I would say you won the fight!

This is the first model that I paint with airbrush. To get as much practice as possible out of it I painted the invasion stripes instead of using decals and used two different shades of olive drab on the wings. (Afaik invasion stripes were painted over once the planes operated from airfields in France)
Decals are applied by now and the first stage of weathering (discoloration mostly on the darker OD and chipping) is done.

Thank you John!
I had the crazy idea to do something daring and add some pipes in the wheel well. Whoa, that was tricky.....

It's one year ago now that I started modeling again. Until now all my models were brush painted. My birthday present was an airbrush and this is the first kit I'm using it on. I picked a scheme with invasion stripes to honour the 80 anniversary of D Day. And to have every possible chance to mess it up with my non-existing airbrush skills.

Looking good! An airbrush is just a tool, keep using it. I mess up at least once on every project I build and paint. I figure that's the only way I really learn.

Gear retracted shouldn't be very difficult, just the main wheels into the wells and nose gear doors closed.
Lots of reference pictures online I think.

Hopefully your 40 Gramms are enough, mine is a tale sitter with 40 Grsmms in it.

@ Bas Tonn: Correct, but on all pictures I found the wheels fit snug into the circular well, while at the model the wheel well has a weird shape and is too deep. I need to build a filler to make the wheels fit.
@ Marco Gallmann: I had to realize thet I needed more weight. I added some in the front wheel well.
